Making Cycling Great: Experience and Advice from the City of Vilnius
Over the past 10 years, Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, has been building an extensive cycling network of almost 130km of cycle lanes and plans on expanding it even further. Looking at photos of the cycle lanes that have been built, you might even think you are looking at a photo of the Netherlands. How did Vilnius achieve this? In this month’s Mobycon Academy session, we explore this, with Lennart Nout in conversation with Chief City Engineer of the City of Vilnius, Lithuania: Anton Nikitin. Anton shares the story of how Vilnius got to where it is today, what challenges they faced, and lessons learned in the process. He will also introduce their new Street Design Manual, and discuss what they are looking towards in the future. Following his brief presentation, Anton and Lennart discuss how a non-engineer became the Chief Engineer of Vilnius, the importance of political will, and engaging the community. Nice document but i thought the 12 Principles would have more about bike lanes and bike paths in them. Parking on-street still seems to take priority.
People on bikes (or cycling traffic) are at their most vulnerable with regards to motor traffic at main junctions/intersections.
Does the Vilnius cycleways network have cycling traffic safe junctions similar to those in the Nederlands?
