L’exploitation du sel à Aigues-Mortes remonte à l’Antiquité. El est attribuée à un ingénieur romain, Peccius. Durant le Moyen Âge l’économie est essentiellement tournée vers la pêche et les salins. En 1868 que les Salins d’Aigues-Mortes sont constitués en société, par le regroupement des propriétaires, pour devenir la société La Compagnie des Salins du Midi. Les salins sont inscrits à l’inventaire général du patrimoine culturel tant pour le site de production, que pour les bâtiments administratifs et de logements.

Salt exploitation in Aigues-Mortes dates back to Antiquity. It is attributed to a Roman engineer, Peccius. During the Middle Ages the economy was mainly focused on fishing and saltworks. In 1868 the Salins d’Aigues-Mortes were incorporated as a company, by the regrouping of the owners, to become the company La Compagnie des Salins du Midi. The salt works are included in the general inventory of cultural heritage both for the production site and for the administrative and housing buildings.
