Connal Tours European Cycling Adventure. The ABC Tour – Adriatic to the Baltic Cycling Tour.
Cycle Day 25: Berlin to Potsdam – Berlin Wall South Ride (Germany). 66.5km (171vm). Train from our accommodation at Babelsberg in Potsdam to Berlin with our bikes to ride the southern section of the Wall route back to Potsdam. Some memorials & information along the route. Many detail the individuals who were shot trying to escape. Quite detailed including how far they were from freedom when shot in the back or the head, often left injured to die, the inability of the guards on the West to help them. the conviction & sentencing of the guards who murdered them (not till the 1990’s). Surprised to be almost rural for parts. Earlier sections were residential Berlin of varying types. Some old and brightened up, others obviously quite new. Some areas less loved than others. Outer areas appear as separate towns (outer suburbs?). Delighted to see conservation parklands & wetland sections along with lots of forested sections. Trees planted in avenues in other parts. A new tramline with young trees takes centre stage in other sections. Sometimes just very wide streets with trees in the centre strip. Following the river in parts where it added to the defence lines (escapees who opted for a swim again being shot & drowned). The reunification has hopefully mended old scars and smoothed over this terrible divide this city and its people had to endure. So many people out cycling and walking – enjoying the peace and serenity offered by these green pathways with a stark past. Returned to our home station of Babelsberg.
Day 25 of 7 weeks cycling the 2400km from south coast to north coast in Europe and a little bit extra.
