From 21 to 23 September 2012 there was a weekend full of bike related events in the Hungarian capital Budapest. The Netherlands Embassy made a Forum discussion and a traveling exhibition about Dutch Bike design possible. The Hungarian Cyclists’ Club had invited 4 Dutch experts for the Forum and I was one of them. They also showed us the good and bad of Budapest bicycle infra on a long bike tour of the city. The Cycle Chic movement with people from around Europe also gathered and held a fashion show after the closed-street party because of the European Mobility Week. A weekend full of festivities!

6:40 Those cycle paths look very promising, they do look very narrow though and I spotted the vehicular/sports cyclists avoiding them.
That junction is an example of how it should NOT be. Too narrow, too many curves. The pedestrians are not separated enough. Width would be okay for one way, not two.
What is sad, that even with how poor that cycling infrastructure is, it is still FAR better than anything we have here in Omaha, Ne. Best we get is either a shared path with pedestrians that is NEVER cleared in the winter. OR narrow bike lanes that are so close to parked cars to be safe you have to ride in the car lane. Also FAR too many sports cyclists in that video. Looks almost like cycling around here.
Budapest is a city bike)))
Great film, Mark. Lovely editing.
Love that silver bike at 2.15.
Yes that's true actually, I think I'm just used to seeing British cycling 'infrastructure' 0_o.
You should come to Bucharest too, simply surprising 🙂

Yeah, sport cyclist often avoid cycle paths and choose roads instead. Sadly however this is illegal in Hungary. According to the stupid regulation, if a cycle path is available, you must NOT go on the road next to it! Regardless of the cycle path condition or how badly designed…
Also, this generates the absurd situation: I am not happy, when they make new cycle path next to a road, because it's narrow and going to be in bad condition sooner or later. And i can't choose the road from that point if i want to ride legally.

You should come back, many things have been changed…
