The original super bike? Cervélo launched their first aero bike in 2002, which changed the whole bike industry, and led to the Cervélo S3, made famous by the one and only Dan Lloyd! Si looks back at the history of Cervélo and compares Dan’s 2010 Tour de France bike to his modern Canyon Aeroad. How different is this 13 year old aero machine to today’s super bikes?

Do you think aero bikes are better or worse than they used to be? 🚲🤔
Still an awesome looking bike!!
Weight is most important. Also, the disc brakes are heavier and less aero. The rider, all things being equal, would want less weight.
I still have my cervelo s2. Still love it in 2023
I’m a steel & friction shifters dork, but this just made me aero-curious.
Many thanks – excellent, I've a 2007 CerveloSLC but didn't fully unerstand the context of the bike with the other models. I've got some heavy Continental tyres, sacrilege – but comfy.
Ive just bought a new 2024 propel …. and can't help but look over to my 2009 tcr advanced and think of how much lighter it is
Disappointed not to hear a mention of the real inventor of aero bikes – Mike Burroughs. Overlooked by the cycling industry and snubbed by the UCI for builidng aero frames that were too fast. His TT bike in 1982 already had aero tubing, aero seatpost and an aero gull wing handlebar. Other than that, an interesting video, thanks for uploading

You should improve the old bike with better wheels and tyres and check the results again xD
Not quite accurate: the S3 is the rebadged Cervélo Soloist Carbon 🙂 The carbon S3 is not Cervélo's original aero bike (that was the aluminum Soloist)
To me it proves how great the modern bikes are. A far less exclusive Canyon, with almost 2 kg of additional weight is still faster than the TdF-spec of some years ago… Let that sink in…
If i add up all the marketing claims – of being 5-20 watts faster with each major model revision over that time… The marketing claims add up to avout 105 watts savings, or , what's that, 15 minutes quicker per hour.
Hmmmm.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Great video. A real eye opener. How far we have gone. 😉
I have an S2 which I bought in 2013 – it's stiff enough compared to more modern bikes (I also have a newer R2/3) but at the time I thought it was very smooth – compared to a Lapierre X-Lite I had previously! So, it's all relative I guess.
I had the Soloist, the Soloist Carbon and the S3. All unbelievably quick and ahead of the game. The SC, however, was unridable over 40 miles, for me. The S3, was much friendlier to the budding amateur. However, i achieved most of my success on the R3-SL.
Rim brakes rule
So really the main gains have been comfort and compliance ?
Stick a standard bar and stem on the Canyon and it will probably be beat by the Cervelo
Great to see this from GCN, whilst were looking back, a few will love and remember this series on Cervelo Test team

I am wondering if for heavier riders (80kg plus) the weight difference, becoming much less of a relative factor (%), allows aero bring higher differences for the aero bike.
