So I love single speed bikes due to the low maintenance nature of them as someone who worked in a bike shop I love my bike running perfectly and less thing to tweak means more smiles for me .
Over COVID I discovered Unicycling which has become my main way of getting around and even winter commuting due to the low maintenance and just being a plane good time. Pick above is from a 2day 100km trip this last weekend.
My wife and I are looking at having a kid in the next few years and it’ll mean going back to having a second wheel.y riding is 90% urban, with going out on gravel rides (really mild stuff) on the weekends. And something’s that can handle my cities winter.
I tried getting a bike with gears last winter and it just wasn’t fun for me as I found it too easy, part of the reason I like the unicycle is the level of exercise involved.
So this leads me to looking at getting a single speed bike. If I can I’d love to grab something with a belt to reduce chain cleaning but for the type of riding I’m doing and taking the kid on bikepacking trips as they get older the ability to swap out gears would be nice even if it was having a different rear wheel I swap out.
There is the option for getting an internally geared bike too but part of me always like going for a single speed.
Has anyone else carried there kids on a single speed? Can you do bikepacking with a small child with it?

Just wanna say thanks for the thread. I picked up cycling last year just after my baby was born and chose to get a cheap single speed and I fucking love it. Now she’s almost old enough to ride with me and was trying to decide what to do, I’ll likely buy a bike just for her and I that fits her needs more than mine.

If you’re in a flat area carrying a kid on a ss bike is fine, just choose your gearing appropriately.
I’d like to add that based on what you’ve said, it sounds like you might really enjoy riding a fixed gear bike. Its pretty low commitment since most flip flop hubs have both, but I think you’ll find it really fun.
