On Sunday 24th 2022 at 10pm Richard Lake ride over 4,000km across Europe from Geraardsbergen, Belgium to Burgas, Belgium.
Along the way Richard will check into control points in the European continent at 4 iconic locations.
The first of these is Krupa in the Czech republic, the longest parcour in the 8th edition of the race at 120km, this is a punchy climb on a mixed surface route into the beautiful Bohemian Switzerland National Park.
From there Richard will be pointing his handlebars south heading 750km to the Alps ascending the Stelvio Pass and onto the second control point of the transcontinental race – Passo Di Gavia in Italy. This is a long parcour at 45km and over 2,500metres of climbing to reach the top of the Alps.
Durmitor National Park awaits Richard at control point 3 in Montenegro. From the transcontinental race website:
“The park is part of the Dinaric Alps and it’s highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, towering over the parcours route, reaches a height of 2,523 meters. The road climbs steeply from Lake Piva, acute elevations zigzagging through rough hewn rock tunnels before the road opens onto the spectacular landscape of jutting rock striations and high rolling pasture. Riders become miniscule dots on a ribbon of sweeping road that provides the most incredible vantage point for the surrounding scenery. Those lucky enough to be racing this parcours at sunrise or sunset are in for a memorable experience. ”
The fourth and final control point en route to Bulgaris is Durmil Strategic Transalpina. Again from the website:
“The final Control will coax riders into the mysterious romance of Romania’s Parâng mountains, part of the Southern Carpathian sweep of rock that carves across Central and Eastern Europe. With the help of our local friend Silviu, we unearthed a little known off-road route, Drumul Strategic, that deviates from the better known asphalt of the Transalpina. The parcours is a challenging mix of gravel and rough, unmanaged track over uneven terrain that will present serious technical challenges in unfavourable weather. Riders will be required to make good decisions and careful risk assessments before attempting this final challenge before the finish on the Black Sea coast. Kit choice, particularly tyre choice, will play an integral part of a rider’s decision making for this section in order to complete their race safely and in good time.”

Good luck on your mammoth ride. All of us from Lincolnshire Cycling Tour group are routing for you. 👍🚴♀️
Great video, really enjoyed it. From a fellow TCR rider I wish you best of luck.
Good luck Richard. Did you include spare chain Links and gear cable in your tool kit?
Good luck Richard. Will be following your trip. Stay safe.
Get yourself a spare Boa dial for the shoes, they're good but can jam/break occasionally and a spare one weighs very little! Good luck with the ride!
I have used an eye drop bottle as a chain lube bottle. Small in size and enough oil for few chain lubrications.
great video, really interesting to see what you'll be taking.
Good luck Richard! Be aware of the sun. I did not see any sunscreen cream 🙂
I see you’re more than half way to the end. Keep it up. It would be interesting to hear how well you chose your kit, when you return.
It will be interesting to see your post ride video. Do wonder if you ended up feeling like you took too much stuff. ie 3 pairs of bib shorts feels overkill!
well done for sticking at it mate, been following you all the way
