Round 14 of the FIM 500 cc World Bike Grand Prix Championships took place at the Hungaroring near Budapest. The famous ‘fast four’ of Eddie Lawson (Yamaha), Wayne Gardner (Honda), Kevin Schwantz (Suzuki) and Wayne Rainey (Yamaha) were threatened by young Australian Mick Doohan (Rothmans Honda) who was riding faster and faster as the determined Aussie roared his way towards the big time.

Many people don't know this, but this was the first race that mick doohan got given equal quality rubber to Gardner. As soon as he got given equal machinery etc, he was hardly ever off the podium for the rest of his career.
