Brompton bikes have a curved frame with a hinged main tube, pivoting rear triangle, fork, and hinged handlebar stem. The main tube and stem are usually made of steel, while the rear triangle and fork are either steel or titanium.

Suspension
Brompton bikes have a combined rear fold and suspension design. The main frame and rear triangle meet at a rubber block that provides suspension. The rider’s weight compresses the suspension block.

Gearing
Brompton bikes can have one-, two-, three-, four-, six-, or twelve-speed gearing. Higher or lower gearing is also available as an option.

Brompton bikes have 349 mm (13.7 in) wheel rims and 16 in tread diameter tires.

Identifying features
Each Brompton bike has a unique serial number that can be found on the seat tube. The first four digits of the serial number indicate the year and month the bike was built.

Andrew Ritchie invented the Brompton bike in 1975 in the bedroom of his London flat. The bike was chosen to represent London in the closing stages of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games
