Stuttgart is located in the center of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The core city is located “between forest and vineyards” in the “Stuttgart basin”, a valley basin through which the Nesenbach flows from the southwest into the Neckar and its tributaries, especially the Vogelsangbach.
The districts extend to the Neckar basin in the north, to the Glemswald and the Gäu in the west, to the foothills of the Schurwald in the east and to the foothills of the Schönbuch in the south. In the southeast, the Neckar flows into the city area from Esslingen am Neckar near the city districts of Hedelfingen and Obertürkheim and leaves it again in the city district of Mühlhausen in the northeast.

The city area extends – unusually for large cities – over an altitude difference of almost 350 meters. The altitude ranges from 207 m above sea level at the Neckarschleuse Hofen to 549 m on the Bernhartshöhe near the Stuttgart motorway junction. The most striking elevations include the Birkenkopf (511 m) on the edge of the valley basin, the Württemberg (411 m) above the Neckar valley and the Grüne Heiner (395 m) on the northwestern city border.

The history of the city dates back to Roman times, when there was a fortified military camp here, the largest and most important in the middle reaches of the Neckar, located at the intersection of important roads.
