The best way is to look for the numbers on the sidewall of your tire to find the width of your current tire. For 26″ tires you should hopefully see xx-559 somewhere. This is your tire size where the xx is your tire width in mm (559 is the size of the rim for 26″ tires).
Now that you know how big your current tires are, measure how much space you have between the frame and the tire–be sure to check all the places where the tire gets close to the frame. You always want to leave at least 3 mm of clearance so if you have 5 mm of space, your new tire can be up to 2 mm wider on each side or 4 mm total.
