Egyptian-American comedian Bassem Youssef speaks to Oxford Union President Ebrahim Osman-Mowafy about his move to the United States, facing Piers Morgan for the third time and why he is working with NBC.

Mr Youssef worked for 13 years as a surgeon in Egypt before switching to a career in media in 2011. Fearing arrest by the al Sisi regime, Youssef left Egypt for Dubai in 2014. He later relocated to the United States and in November 2015, he hosted the 43rd International Emmy Awards.

ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world’s most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: https://oxford-union.org/supportus

  1. Arabs cant stand Jewish success, it hurts them to the core. The fact that a Jewish state which is far more successful per capita than its neighbors even exists, boils their blood. Bassem might not be anti-Jew, but rest assured most arabs and moose lems are against Israel whenever the subject comes up, no matter who's on the other side.

  2. Oxford University? Please tell me what is taught in the language courses there if anything? In classification of languages and more so the grouping of many languages by region? Is Semite an academic word used to categorize about about a half a dozen languages and people groups? In a region as large as all of Arabia to Northeastern Africa? What are those languages and peoples?

  3. Maybe if the polls had predicted Trump, more people would’ve held their nose and voted for Kamala. There is no influencing Trump, he’s an angry narcissist.

  4. This is funny, he is right. There has never been a woman Arab leader as far as I'm aware. Just like Ra-see-ya and the great US of A. Maybe in the ancient, ancient times but not modern.

    Actually, no its not funny.

  5. When a person has been accused of being an agent for CIA, Mossad, Iran and so on, but his actions and his conversation and commentary is honest, you know he is hated for just speaking the truth. Well done to people like Bassem Yousef for speaking the truth.

  6. ….HOW???? IS THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY inviting such a shallow and superficial speaker – calling himself a comedian – nobody else would, since he is neither funny nor thoughtful

  7. They might try to recreat the ongoing history, but it is their own history, we know where we stand in history, past and present..love from Algeria Algeria Algeria. .
