Actually this sign does not mark a play street. It is a traffic reduced street. If you are driving on this street with your car, you are not allowed to drive faster than walking speed (this is max. 5 km/h, which is about 3.1 miles per hour).
Every day I cycle 10 km (one way) to work (Netherlands) on my (electric) bike. By car it takes me about 22 – 30 minutes depending on the weather and vacation time, by bike it takes me 24 – 26 minutes. Cycling is safe (we have wide and separate bike paths) and the connections are very good. Besides, I arrive fresh and awake and on the way back I can leave the working day behind me. Rain is not a problem, I just put on a good rain suit.
Not a German: I visited Freiburg like a decade ago. The city is beautiful and the people are awesome. Had one of the best times of my life there so I extended my vacation to stay for a full month, I loved it so much! 🙂
Your billion Dollar idea is what actually happens. There are utility trams for different purposes and there are ones that mow the lawn.
There are also street vehicles like the Unimog, that can transform their chassis to train wheels and drive on the tracks.
1:04 That's not correct., Freiburg cycle paths have a total length of 195 km. Dot in Münster the cycle paths have a total length of 300 km.

I live there, i studied there, i still work in this city. There are so many bikes. Super annoying sometimes.
I live in an average city in Lower-Saxony/ Germany. I am nearly 48 years old. I owened just one car in my entire life. It was a complete waste of money and time. I really enjoy living without a car, although I love travelling all around europe and beeing mobile in everyday life.

Oh yeah. People do definitely walk in front of trams a lot. You might want to check out those webcam video compilations from Prague tram drivers' cabs.
It is not uncommon in europe that some parts of the center/areas are mostly reachable by foot, bike or the tram.
It is nice because it is way more relaxed without cars. And for cars there are simply big parking garages around those areas.
But not every city has a similar amount of bike traffic as shown here.
Jay walking is an American thing, a result of your car centric culture.
About the traffic signs: you were close. The round sign with the red border indicates something you're not allowed to do. It's indeed used for speed limits, but in these cases it was a weight limit (9 tons as you guessed) and the other one is "no overtaking" (the left car, which is overtaking the right car, is usually also colored red, but that was hard to see in this picture).

There are like a lot of people who hate cars and always use the bike and others, that do the other way around. You got that mostly in citys, off course, but even in rural areas, you somtimes got bike lanes, and nearby to my grandparents the4e is a 14 kilometer long one with no villages because the entire region is dominated by a historical military training base that you can't enter because of unexploded munition. But Germany, especially in the citys yas really a lot of people that use bike only.
Freiburg was also the First City in germany weich elected a major from the Green party

It is weird that "more bikes than cars" ist impressive somehow. any family might have one car but should have multible bikes.
E-Scooters just block sidewalks! A lot of people are really annoyed when there are 4 of these lying across the entire sidewalk and you have step over them.

My favorite island where I go to on vacation is completely car-free. They have them only for ambulance, the firefighters things like that. It's just really funny when you see groceries pulled by horses. The island is called Juist, in the very north-west of Germany, Lower Saxony.

You should have a look on Amsterdam in Netherlands. They have multi level bike parking lots. In Maastricht (NL) is an underground parking lot for bicycles. Parking 24h for free. The dutch are more bike crazy than us Germans. I love cycling when I am there. The infrastructure is great. In Arnhem there is a separate roundabout for bycicles with tunnels below the street to have no intersections. Almere is a city from the seventies planned with separate infrastructure for trains, busses, cars, bikes and pedestrians. I really like the Dutch 😊
I've seen these rentable scooters here in Leipzig every now and then, but in comparison you'll see rentable bikes at almost every corner or wherever someone left it after renting.
I don't have a drivers license and don't like being very close to strangers and not having fresh air, so I own my very own e-scooter. tbf my work is enough activity that I don't need more exercise.
I will walk home on the days when I can't use my scooter due to heavy rain, snow or ice. after having to take the bus to get to work I sure as heck will walk home.
seriously? I'd have less of an issue with a tram, but the entire street gets renewed, so replacement bus it is and these busses always drive in a way that flings you around like a rollercoaster ride and that being flung around thing is what I hate most about rollercoasters. how dare they steal my control over my movements? how dare the bus does it? how dare does the bus driver make me overbend my wrist today, because I had to grab that hard onto a railing to stay steady.
