Bike : State Bicycle Co. 4130 8speed road

current tires: 28c
Wheelset dimensions: Low Profile (14mm) 700x32Hx14G

i would like to put 32c tires on the same wheelset; the website says 32c are the max tire size but i am not sure if that is referring to the max tire clearance for the forks or if that is the max tire clearance for the given rim width and fork.

I would like to replace the tires for 700x32c Schwalbe Pro Ones ; would these tires work with my currently wheelset?

  1. Max tire size on the website will be for the frame and fork.

You can get away with 32mm tires on a 14mm internal rim, but that’s just about as wide as I would be comfortable recommending. You’ll want to run slightly more pressure than you would on a wider rim, due to the tire being rather lightbulb shaped. Without enough pressure the tire can get a bit squirmy in corners and the risk of pinch flats increases.

Once upon a time the Mavic Open Pro (15mm internal) was a very popular cyclocross rim used with 33mm tires at very low pressures, so it’s doable!

Schwalbe’s tire size chart doesn’t go down to 14mm internal, but you can extrapolate that 32mm would be within acceptable range. https://www.schwalbetires.com/technology-faq/tire-dimensions/

You’ll be fine. Based on my experiences with Schwalbe tires recently, they’ll come up a bit under 32mm measured width on your rims. Maybe start a smidge higher than recommended pressure based on the Silca or SRAM tire pressure calculators, as you’ll be slightly more prone to pinch flats vs. using wide rims.
