This is a CCM Brut 4.0 (a Canadian big-box special) that I picked up for a couple hundred dollars on Facebook marketplace and after a few changes has been the most fun bike I've ever owned. It's a low end bike with low end components but it has completely rekindled the joy of cycling for me.

The list:
– Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 26×4.00 with Ottalus TPU tubes (this combo cost more than I paid for the bike but was a night and day change from the stock tires and tubes)
– Bontrager aluminum 780mm comp bars
– MEC aluminum 55mm +7deg stem
– Deity grips
– Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes
– 11-42t Lanxaur (Amazon) wide range cassette and goatlink with the stock Altus 8spd derailleur
– 34t Msreck (Amazon) oval chainring
– Plattbk (Amazon) Aluminum seat post and gel seat
– Rockbros (Amazon) pedals

Good job realizing you could get that Goatlink on an Altus. Thought they were for the M6000 series Deore. Haven’t tried other Shimano deraileurs with my trio of Goatlinks. Now I have a new trick I will definitely have to try.

Hey Brut buddy! Nice bike! I put maxxis fbf/fbr on mine as well as race face Chester pedals. Loving it so far, (sort of) excited for the snow to fly!

  3. Even before I read more description, I was thinking the tire upgrade must help a lot. Bike looks nice and fun to ride!

  4. I have the same bike. Found it used for $100. Put on new bars and brak s from my parts bin. Put on Dillinger 4 tires and a wide range cassette from Amazon and have the best budget build out there! Oh and last year I painted it for kicks. Enjoy!

  5. Great looking bike! I build one up a few years ago and sold it during COVID.

I’m now on a Bigfoot but the Brute was a blast and a great price!

Does the wide range cassette and new chain ring give you a noticeably better range? I might copy cat you for that!
