This is the journey into the Thuringian Forest as we headed North back through Germany on the DL650 Vstrom.
The roads were fantastic and the towns and villages as beatiful as anywhere we had been.

I'm definitely, "Further Flung" …mentally as well says the Dr. but I digress, never had heard of this forest so I looked her up & you
are quite a ways from home. I've not pulled into any fast-food eatery in a long long time. But I see the trash everywhere I go and
it pisses me off. When I've got trash during my travels, I throw it in my floorboard until I get some place proper to dispose of it.
I've seen moto-cycle riders pick trash up & throw it right back into the car that tossed it…kudo's to them. As for how it is and how
it used to be? Whoever created this earth made it to be resilient, in that it can take the worst & clean it up over time. These type
places are in every nation & the people(poorest of them) find a way to live in whatever they've been given. Inspirational to see &
it reminds me of your garden, though I've not seen the Gardening Channel that you have, I can see you as a beacon of hope in
the event of a catastrophic break of supply or energy. You're a wealth of info….. only place in the US where I've seen a hint of
this type of houses or buildings is the Upper Northeastern United States. Upper New York State, Vermont, and others up thru
the mountains there who might've had family from German roots….. or they mimic some of it but I wish I saw this outside my
door…. NOT. But I'm happy enough, have a roof over me head & food/water. Need a bike now. I'm feeling it. peace
Roads look similar to here in New Zealand, although in the last few years we seem to have a few more potholes appearing than in the past. You won't see any rubbish on the sides of the road here either, if someone throws rubbish out the car window, every other car around would be honking the horn and flashing the lights etc, people just don't do it! From what I know, the Germans like order, so that may exp;lain the very tidy houses etc. Here it's a bit hit and miss, more $$ tidier houses and gardens generally. I think the poorer you are the lower the priority of pride and presentation of your abode!
Back in '71 a campaign was started called "Don't Rubbish Australia" and it's been very successful. Roadside litter is hugely reduced now, to the point that seeing some is cause for comment. The countryside on this trip is similar to southern NSW, but the German villages are far nicer-looking; Aussie ones tend to look a bit dry and dusty, coz that how it is here. I've also lived for 10 years in the Philippines, where there is a lot of garbage strewn around and the roads are pretty ordinary and extremely congested, particularly in the cities. Manila to Angeles City is 90 km; it takes between 3-6 hours on an express bus…
Barry Smith – a two time motorcycle World Champion and four time IoM TT winner says in his book 'Whispering Smith' that, back in the mid-'60 when he was racing the international circus, that East Germany (and Czechoslovakia) was drab and run-down. However, I have a friend from Thuringia who was a Major in the GDR's National People's Army (Landstreitkrafte); he maintains that, by the '80's, things were pretty good. Times change.
Thuringia is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Germany. A real insider tip. Many German fairy tales have their origins there. Everything that the motorcycle tourer likes.
I used to live in Schmalkalden just above where it says "US" on the the map
Such a beautiful area to live.
Great for bike riding,
In summer there's so many bikes around it's crazy…
