With a trend for wide tyres on gravel bikes I was keen to see what the new Vielo V+1 Race Edition with 50mm tyres was like to ride on my local trails. The results were illuminating…

Yes, they’re better.
I'm sorry but that tyre clearance on the front is marginal and only really suitable for dry riding. I suspect the rear is the same.
My Crux is set up with 50c/2" tires and I love the size for all roads in my path.
So its a drop-bar MTB for the most part. "Gravel" seems to be splitting into two camps – bikes optimized for riding on gravel ROADS vs bikes optimized for the stuff folks used to ride XC MTB's on. I get it…I had drop bars on my MTB back-in-the-day and still have a 26" wheeled, V-braked, front-suspended one with 50 mm tires that gets ridden now and then along with my "real" gravel bike that has 38 mm slick tires and gets used mainly on paved roads. I love fat tires!!!
I've had my V+1 race edition for a month and its ace! Amazingly fast on the tarmac too considering the 50mm tires
Yes. Yes narrow tyres are outdated for most uses. For this rider anyway
A modern (better) version of my first MTB (1988) with drop bar…
History repeats itself…
Tires are getting wider…..
Love this bike. Which size you tested? M? Does it fit for you properly?
I would change the drop bar for a mtb one just to increase the fun factor 😄
Nice clean look, refreshing to see a frame without all the holes and plugs. Frame Designers need to catch a wake up! These guys got it right. I’m impressed by how stable it was, looked like you had it under control and not the other way around.
I can see your argument, but honestly, with mtb sales tanking, I feel like if sanity returned to bike companies, most people would be more comfortable with updated 1990’s-2000 mtb flat bar bikes. I have so many friends that are intrigued by my gravel bike, but the moment they hop on for a test spin they’re off balance with having to reach so much for the drop bar hoods.
Also, wider tires seem to make stronger the case for 650b wheels.
Running 50mm Continental Race King on my gravel bike and I really enjoy ride on any terrain and amazing confort.
Can we get MTB people to start using millimetres for their tyre widths?
I ride the MOG with 2.1 Schwalbe Thunder Burts 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
If you ride a bunch of rough stuff then maybe the wide tires makes sense. I have 45's on my Grail right now, but I like the feel of 40's better. We have a lot of dirt roads where I live so I mostly ride Gucci gravel. It's more like a road.
I ran Panracer X1 45mm at 18 psi on Zipp 303 Firecrest last weekend at the Graean Cymru UCI World Series race. Wider is the definitely the way to go. Not speed penalty and awesome on the fast descents. Just go flat out with total confidence. So much better than the 40mm tyres I use to run.
“What difference 10mm makes”.. says my girl too
Recently went from 40mm to 45mm and the difference was barely noticeable in speed, but the comfort gained was very noticeable. Would try 50mm but they won’t fit in the back.
Why not take a proper XC hardtail with a ‚classic‘ geometry…and With a THREADED bb and a straight handle bar?! That’s the real deal …
I'm better served on a light 120mm MTB. No benefit to big tires on a rigid bike.. IMO of course.
I ride 50mm on a Canyon Grizl. Absolutely amazing. So smooth. I should have upgraded from a 25mm road bike a long time ago.
Pretty soon gravel bikes will evolve into mountain bikes. 🤣
Great video! Thanks man!
4K for that frame from a company
ive never heard of!
Love the frame color… but a sram-specific frame without a UDH??? Hard to pick this over the crux considering pretty similar price points
The fork doesn't look very aero. Steep price for something they're marketing towards people wearing street clothes. Good luck selling them.
I'll be setting up my RLT RDO with 44mm Rene Herse tires. Can't wait!!
