The second German offensive of 1918 (operation ‘Georgette’) tried to cut through south of Ypres and sweep the British army back to the channel; in the first few days the Germans drove back the British divisions, many of whom had suffered badly on the Somme in March. Only heroic resistance stopped the breakthrough and saved Ypres.

In this presentation Phil Tomaselli tells the story of this epic battle.

  1. My German grandad may well have been there. The history of the movements of the Oldenburg regiment records the Grosse Schlacht in Frankreich. That would have been the 37th infantry Brigade , the regiment no 91 as part of the 19th division.

  2. My Grandad was told after he got badly wounded at the Somme that he would never be called to fight again. However he was recalled back to the war to fight at the Lys. He survived.

  3. There is a great rustic cafe on mount kemmel, or at least there was 30 years ago when I enjoyed a great early lunch there….in misty autumn weather.
