This week, Dan & Si cover the pro cycling arms race, which is real and gaining pace! This isn’t a race anymore just for the best and most talented riders, but for the best coaches, aerodynamicists, minds & equipment. Dan & Si also dive into how this arms race might not actually be good news for the rest of us though…

They also cover Mark Cavendish’s aikido skills, how you can get arrested for cycling and using your phone in Japan, bike brands working to limit their carbon footprint, a competition to win a CORE heat sensor and much more!

  1. Why am I so amused watching you describe Dan's arm movements for the benefit of your podcast listeners in the section based on looking at a photo? It's the small things that make life enjoyable.

  2. #ZwiftWorkout Wout van Aert: VO2 Max Training. I tried to finish it on two different occasions, but failed horribly both times. I seem to remember Sy giving it a shot too, but if memory serves he did it my way 😅

  3. Of course good tech helps, but I rode my first road season as a U17 rider against other guys with all the best tech and coaches available to them while I was on a bike a tenth the price and even won my first CX race on that same road bike (not saying you should ride cross on a road bike 😅)

  4. A power meter costs less than one out of town trip to a race now, it’s not at all a barrier to pro cycling. Out of town travel is probably the biggest barrier to becoming a pro that you overlooked.

  5. Caption competition: After his tactic of refusing to follow a straight line in the sprints hasn’t been working lately, Cav demonstrates a new method Jasper Phillipsen can use to win green at next years Tour

  6. I coach a team with 50 kids from 9 to 18 – the most valuable thing for them is time: folks willing to take them out on training rides, skills coaching, etc. The bike is secondary. The best kids are able to efficiently use what gears they have and stay focused for the length of their race – skills only developed from hours on the bike regardless of what that is.

  7. Agree on the kids racing, Dan will have seen it himself at Wessex Cyclocross League, and it happens at RRs too. Richest parents buy high end kit for their kids, I've seen U10s with carbon everything, deep section wheels and aero helmets! Great if you can afford it, but it's a bit off-putting and completely unnecessary. My kids are on second hand bikes but we look after them well, alloy everything, and they do ok, but most importantly, they love it. British Cycling do have some rules, but they are enough for youngsters. But then again, they aren't interested in grass roots, MTB, road or cross, except for the money it makes them.

  8. Cycling does need to not go too elitist… there is no reason it shouldnt be largely accessible to the masses and from all backgrounds. Lets not go to GOLF hey!
