Anyone have any ideas what is wrong with my brakes? They are trp slate Evos, and since I got the bike they have made this awful noise and braking performance isn't as good as it could be.
I can't visually see any oil leaking from the caliper, and I've changed pads once already with not much improvement.
I brought the bike back to the shop I purchased it from once and they cleaned the rotors and pads and said the brakes look fine and it may have been contaminated some other way. But if the problem comes back after changing pads again, it must be a leak, right?
Almost ready to just bit the bullet and upgrade the brakes myself.

Sounds like metal contacting the rotor. Is it scored?
Mine had similar sound when pads were gone and it was metal to metal, but since you changed them and took it to the shop …
Are there any signs of leak around pads?
It does sound like contamination to me if it’s a combination of noise like that and lack of power. Are the pads and rotor bedded in and aligned properly?
Sound like a pad has been lost or slipped out of place…
I generally do my own work… but the last time I used a shop… this happened.

This confirms my initial suspicion that the disc should be to blame. I guess sinter pads and a too soft disc, faulty or for made for different pads.
I deal with this noise a lot for customers. And although it isn’t an “issue” people dislike it, for far reason.
What *typically* is the issue, is the caliper is sitting a hair too low and a portion of the of the rotor “spokes” are passing through the pads when braking which causes this wallowing noise.
You can confirm this for yourself by looking at the rotor and seeing where the braking track is on it. If you can see it passing over the spokes then that’s the issue.
You can resolve this by spacing the caliper up a bit with the thin metal brake hardware washers. That should be all that’s needed as you don’t want the caliper sitting too high either.
The sound is normal, the vibrations are not. Both brakes on both my friend’s and my slash 8 gen 5 makes that sound but they brake smoothly and don’t vibrate.
Is the rotor centered in the caliper and not hitting any part of the fork, caliper or calipermount?
