Can someone explain to me what the appeal is to take the 8 over the 7 whilst the 8 has aluminium wheels whilst the 7 has carbon wheels?

It seems even the ultegra on the 8 can't overcome the downgrade of the wheels? Can someone tell me if i am making a mistake in my thinking here?

The 7 and 8 purely signifies the group set tier.

Ie 105 Vs Ultegra or Rival Vs Force.

What wheels come with the bike will also be another factor. Generally speaking the 8 will come with mid tier carbon wheels, ie most likely with DT Swiss 350 or 240 hubs. The 7 will come with 370 hubs, which is essentially a value hub, but pretty close to 350 hubs.

In my case, I opted for the 7 and made some upgrades over time, especially going for a custom wheel set.

The 8 has better components (drivetrain, rotors, saddle, slightly better aluminum wheels). You’ll want to upgrade the wheels either way to a carbon set. If you’re not a weight weenie or racer, get the 7 and then use the money saved to get a nice set of wheels.
