ALWAYS wear a helmet, even if you are just going “down the street”
Clearly, I didn’t and I am lucky this is the worst of what happened to me, that’s gravel embedded in my lip in the first photo, second photo after leaving the emergency room
A rule I ignored, and got 5 head fractures as a reward.

Good point but, if it is any consolation, a helmet would not have protected your mouth or your face.

I thought this was the motorcycle sub for a second. Did you get hit by a car?

Ouch, lucky escape as it could have been a lot worse. Hope you get better soon.

Oh dang, I hope you have a swift recovery!! I had a small spill a decade ago where I wasn’t going particularly fast but just the way I landed was mostly on my face and that was super not fun. Helmet protected me from a concussion… but my face took the rest of it. -_-;;;

Depends on the bike for me, racing bike and gravel bike absolutely, my oma fiets just getting around the city, no like everyone else who lives here.

Hope it’s not too painful, and you heal quickly. Typical road bike helmet probably wouldn’t have helped much. But maybe one with a hard visor would possibly help protect your face.

A helmet saved my life. I crashed my bike going off the side of a trail, over the handle bars and headfirst into a rock. My helmet was crushed, my vision blurred, my tooth cracked, my back scraped and bloody. But my skull was intact and my brain bleed-free. Spent about two weeks dealing with a concussion but better than the alternative.

Nah. I rarely wear a helmet. Lots of fast distance on road? Yes. Pottering about? No.
Do you wear a helmet walking down the road? Knee pads? Chest protector? No. Because you make a risk / hassle analysis.

Holy shit… I hope you recover well from this!

Miss, in a past post you shared one of the worst hot water blisters I’ve ever seen. Please take care of yourself.

Why aren’t you on here giving unsolicited advice that people wear full-face helmets?
Why aren’t you insisting that car users wear helmets?
(As an aside, I do happen to wear a helmet for most rides. But I don’t lecture others about it.)
