This is originally for a cantilever brake, which relies on cantilever levers. Newer brakes are almost always V-brakes, which require levers that pull the cable a farther distance. Some levers have a switch setting to set them for V or C (V-brake and Cantilever, respectively).
I’d personally go with upgrading to a V-brake for the greater stopping power, but sometimes I set them up as V-brake rear with cantilever front so it’s not easy to flip oneself over the handlebar.
