beater single speed is almost always more fun than my “good” geared bike

I have to agree. I have an old Rockhopper singlespeed conversion that is a blast to ride. 

Those type of bikes are always loads of fun because they cost next to nothing, you never really worry about them and replacement parts are available everywhere and dirt cheap.
