Took the $10 Peugeot I got last week and built it up with parts from the Co-Op (if you’re in the DC area and don’t go to VéloCity Bike Coop you’re dumb. They are amazing people with a wealth of knowledge)
New (used):
Friction thumb shifters
700c wheelset
Chain (this was actually new)
GP4s tires
Tubes
Cassette (it’s 11-28 and I may swap it to something more hill/thicc boi friendly)
Shimano alivio derailleur
Brake levers (already had)
Seat (already had)
The guys at the coop helped me rebuild the axel and hubs on the wheels and taught me how to redish the rear wheel. All in I’m at about $200. I 100% blew my budget but this build is going to a friend to introduce him to cycling so it is totally worth it.
Now final question. Does anyone have any recommendations for brake pads that fit these old caliper brakes?

I recently put ultegra pads and carriers on some dia compe road brakes from 1985. I had been unsure if they would work, but bought a caliper with pads from the used parts bin at LBC to verify. You can buy these new, either Shimano or kool stop brand. It’s a pretty cheap and effective brake upgrade.
This was my first real bike…bought new in 1983…in black.
Stolen 5 years later…and I still look for it. Had I still had it, this would have been its fate.
BTW – The chainring is riveted to the crank arms on this…so if/when it starts squeaking, replacement crank will be needed.
I also built a blue Peugeot that had no right being as nice as it is
