I was following this guys tutorial https://youtu.be/ZDK6knIPhQg?si=-q1CpPciIfe2pl-x on how to remove crank arms, I threaded it in, held it with one wrench while turning the outer part with a different wrench going clockwise, well it was very hard to turn so I started hammering it with a mallet and it eventually became easier and then the entire crank puller fell out and I saw all the threads inside like the pictures provided, the arms still didn't want to come off though. Could it have been the crank puller itself? It was part of a cheap set and 3 of the things weren't machines right and didn't fit things they were supposed to. Will I have to replace the whole crank set or should I stop trying to remove it and just leave it as is?

    1. You didn’t thread the crank puller in far enough, as it appears that only the threads near the end of the crank were destroyed.

Unior makes a tapered crank puller to deal with damaged threads, and it generally works pretty well.
