    1. I noticed some strange noises and quite a bit of play in my rear hub. I took it apart and noticed there was space for additional pawls. Is that normal?

    2. Sweet baby child, you took apart your freewheel. those are not meant to be taken apart or really serviced, they are a cheap replaceable part. Im guessing it is either 6 or 7 speed. Just buy a new one for $15-$20, you will also need the correct Freewheel removal tool, or just have your LBS change it for a couple bucks.

If your axle is loose tighten the cones and locknut

    3. I think your good on the pawls, most of that style came with two.

Be careful with those super flimsy shims, that is how you get the bearing preload.

    4. It’s not missing a pawl. The space would be rounded out, not square, if there was supposed to be a pawl there. You can confirm by removing a pawl and comparing the space behind it to the empty spaces you are referring to. Clean, grease the bearings and oil the pawls. Usually they get noisy when they are thirsty for oil.
