This is my first bike since I was a teenager, 13 years ago. I asked a friend to assemble it and he said he had never seen shifters like this. Will I need to change these shifters soon or will I be able to ride this normally? (I'm going to ride it for the first time on Saturday)

Well do they shift? Then they’re fine. It’s an older design, modern groupsets integrate the shifting into the brake lever. But some entry level bikes still use them, such as the RC100 from Decathlon. There’s nothing inherently wrong with them if they work.

    3. Define normal 🤣

Many wont like because its lower tier shimano, but should work perfectly fine.

Define soon. I dont have a scale of how long they will last, but its legit shimano, and i see even their low tier products still running on peoples bikes years down the road.

Ride it enjoy, if you love riding and start putting in the hours, worry about any upgrades later.

    4. They are some of the worst drop bar shifters currently made. But I imagine it was a very affordable bike. Ride it till it doesn’t work. Could be years!

The beauty of bike riding doesn’t require thousands of dollars. I say this as someone who has learned that after spending lots of money. Wish I spent less time worrying about equipment choices and more time pedalling.

    6. I’ve been using those exact shifters for a decade.
they’re fine, just make sure the cable tension is good.
worth noting that the ‘left’ shifter is a friction shifter, so it might not ‘line up’ perfectly with the H / L marking when shifting. just slowly push the lever until the front derailleur shifts over, and keep a make sure its not rubbing the chain by pushing it a tad farther.
