I am replacing the cartridge bearings (6000-2RS) on my single speed wheel hubs and see recommendations online to use a marine grease/ NLGI-2 grease or something like Park Tool HPG-1 grease. I have essentially a lifetime supply of this PENN fishing reel grease already and thought it may work for my wheel hubs given its similar properties to marine grease. It’s thick, blue, and described as “built to lubricate and prevent corrosion in saltwater environments.” It might just be marine grade grease though PENN doesn’t disclose their proprietary formula so I don’t know.

    1. Marine grease should be good, so if it’s a similar formula without any additives that can cause issues you should be fine. I’d be careful with getting it on surface of your frame or other components as it might stain the finish (or worse, react with it).

I literally use engine assembly grease and it works fine but i could be an absolute dickhead

    3. Blue coloured grease usually contains PTFE which is actually really good for bearings, and it doesn’t change it’s properties in contact with water….which is again good for bikes.

They might not disclose their proprietary formula, but you should be able to request the safety data sheet where they have to write at least the basic information about the ingredients.
