My friends all chipped in for my birthday to get me a new bike – Canyon Grizl 7 1by in Aluminum. I am super stoked, have been riding a pair of Motobecanes ($300 and $500) for the past 5 years and got thousands of miles on them so this is quite the upgrade for me. It's going to be used mostly as a commuter (60 miles a day) but I'm already planning to take it on some trails and will be doing a century in a few weeks.

    My impressions:

For this being one of Canyon's heavier bikes, it is super lightweight especially comparing to my previous bikes.

Having done all my own repairs previously, it was fun to learn about the front suspension and how to adjust it.

Having torque settings written on the bike everywhere is super cool.

The suspension eats potholes and bumps without a problem. Hopping onto and off of curbs feels a lot less sus.

How smooth everything is in terms of sound and feel is kind of mind blowing.

My previous bikes were one single speed and one road with a front and rear derailleur. Having a derailleur only in the rear on the Canyon is a great alternative that I'm feeling like I prefer.

Can't wait to hit some gravel. Any tips for a newbie? NY/NJ area.

    1. Nice bike. What’s NY/NJ area? Like hoboken or greenwood lake? Or in between? I can definitely recommend some stuff for any of those.

I love me a frame bag too. My bag is a little different but it also didn’t quite fit right at the front. I was so mad because I took the tags off and everything. I then had a lightbulb moment and pushed it back to my seat post. So much better.

    2. Sweet ride and outfitting! Congrats! FWIW My rule of thumb to slow down the N+1 progression is to ride the number of miles that correspond with the bike price before hitting +1. Arbitrary, but effective 😂
