Hi all,

My Neuron 5 AL was stolen recently, and I feel empty now, I need to get another one. I've done about 2k kilometers in 1 year since I got it.

I went looking for a new Canyon, but seeing the overall lack of stock on the Neuron (Size M), I went to look at other models, and the Spectral caught my eye.

I've done a lot of research, but each forum classifies them differently and I don't know who to believe necessarily. I'm hesitating between the Neuron CF 9 SL (not in stock so only an example) and the Spectral CF 8 CLLCTV (29"). I'm not sure about this Neuron, but in any case I'm aiming for 4k€ max.

I like climbs as much as descents, I'm not a pro but I like the idea of keeping a bike for a long time and evolving with it.

I love rotten terrain, fast descents and small jumps (I still have to learn), climbs are mandatory to go down later 🙂 On the other hand, I have a lot of flat terrain at home at the moment.

There you go, I have no idea which one to turn to, or if it's better to wait for a new model as we're coming to the end of the year, I don't know the brand well enough to know their usual release dates.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

  1. First off, really sorry that your 🚲 was stolen. There’s a special place in hell for bike thieves…

Haven’t ridden the Neuron so can’t comment on it. Did have a Spectral CF 8 and it was a great bike (sold it due to it being used and not covered under warranty). The Spectral is efficient climbing bike for its category. It climbs noticeably better than the Stumpjumper Evo build I have now. I’m in the US in the Tahoe area where the Spectral does well: fast, steep, chunky, alpine style terrain.

One factor I’d consider is the coil shock on the Spectral. My understanding is a coil shock will provide consistent, plush damping for rough terrain and heavier riders, while an air shock is lighter, more adjustable, and preferred (generally in my area) for versatility and fine-tuning on varying trails.

Did you ever feel that the Neuron wasn’t enough bike for the trails you mostly ride? As others mention many times in this sub, it’s best to get the bike that suits the trails you’ll ride the most. If you have a lot of flatter terrain then the Neuron will likely be a better fit.
