Hi everyone I am looking to buy my first road bike. I have narrowed the search to the Giant Defy Advanced 1 and the Canyon Endurace CF SLX 7.
Use case: I am just starting my biking journey but the ultimate goal is to complete a half ironman and full ironman in the next couple years. Because of the long distance, I feel like an endurance frame would be ideal for me.
I was originally looking for the 105 mechanical group set but the electronic shifting is so niceee and I feel like it would make a difference on the longer rides + less maintenance. (Please feel free to deter/knock some sense into me if this is overkill).
Canyon Endurace – Size M – $3,599
- Free Shipping
- 30 day free return
2023 Giant Defy – Size M/L – $3,450 (sale)
- I would be purchasing this from a LBS and they offered a complimentary tune-up within the first two months.
- 2 year crash warranty
- Test ride was on a size L
- Choosing a size M/L based on geometry table compared to Canyon Endurace size M
The specs are basically identical.
The one thing that set me off about buying the Giant was that my LBS kept pushing me to buy a Large even though that is not my size. The only reason they pushed the Large was because they had it in-store (them M/L I would have to order). It just felt scummy – trying to sell a bike that they wanted gone instead of finding one that was right for me.
For reference – I am 181cm (5' 11") which would make me a size M/L with an 86cm inseam.
What are your thoughts on these two brands? models? What would you choose? Any other bike recommendations? All advice/ comments are welcome 🙂
