Dubbed the hardest stage ever, this was La Vuelta’s most brutal challenge. The six major climbs and 5,000m of vertical ascent tested even the most race hardened. The win was eventually claimed by Spain’s Mikel Landa (Astana Pro Team) but the real story lay in Chris Froome (Team Sky) cracking after an early crash, surely dashing any hopes of taking the Tour-Vuelta double this year. A valiant attack from the GC group by Astana’s Fabio Aru placed him second behind his teammate and in red for the first time.
