Whatβs your longest ride? π
Mark is such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
I'm watching this while I'm recovering from yesterday's ride and I'm in tears from recognition over everything I did wrong as well as right.
The plan was 300km but I switched to the shorter 200km route because of the crazy wind. It was right on my doorstep so I will definitely have another go at the long route.
i love this guy
125 miles coming up on Saturday! My own route and first of this length but no bike computer so itβs memorisation and pen and paper waypoints!
500 – Arkansas High Country Race
Wonderful video !!!!! Wanting to ride my first 100 Mile Century. This is EXCELENT TRAINING ADVICE …… THANK YOU
Embrace the suck! It's so true.
I disagree slightly with his advice on eating, nutrition during the ultra rides. For myself, on a 1200 kilometer brevet, and the shorter brevets leading up to the long distance, a liquid diet is necessary. High calorie, liquid, mixed up powder drinks. Easy for the body to digest. Your stomach revolts and stops functioning when continuously exercising for 24 hours straight. Or 50 out of 75 hours. You will throw up normal food. And/or not be able to process nearly enough calories for a long distance event.
How would ultra athletes recommend a father/husband/business owner train for such events? The idea of ultra is appealing but I'm afraid training would negatively impact the family. I genuinely am interested in how others with a similar scenario as mine do it.
Excellent! I forgot this was about cycling and received some excellent life advice ππ₯°
Markβ¦do you suffer with depression after your big eventsβ¦ I do. I train for months to do my one big event/ ride, Iβm focused on my goal, purpose, a head full of mantras, putting in the early mornings, knowing that I have to βdo the miles, to make the milesβ and at the end of it allβ¦ I change, until I find myself next years event. You are constantly challenging yourself, but if you ever stop for a period of time, do you find it hard?
What a brilliant video. Thank you both for such an interesting insight into ultra distance cycling.
I've got my first proper ultra next month, the algorithm knows
Thanks, Si and mark…………….great stuff.
This video deserves a mention of the GOAT of the sport, Jure RobiΔ. R.I.P., absolute legend
Great interview! What he says is applicable to everyoneβs life.
Would love to know more about his conditioning! I know that necks are a big problem on ultras but how do you condition your neck?
for me, the mental game is the challenging bit. Not going too hard at the beginning and pacing yourself. first time I tried 200 on the 100 in vermont, I didn't eat and pace correctly. Since then I've done solo 160 mile rides. For me it's easier to pace when I listen to my body and not chasing someone else. riding in beautiful places helps to enjoy the ride and take your mind off the pain. Can't imagine doing ultra endurance that are over 200 miles.
His amazing he applies the values of the human being has,
As a 60 year old endurance athlete. THIS IS THE BEST ENDURANCE ADVICE YOU WILL EVER HEAR.β€οΈππ΄π¦πΊ
So many business and life lessons on pushing through hard times.
Whist Simon is my favourite, funny presenter, he's also brilliant in his interview style.
I feel like this guy is 1 billion percent correct 4-7 min mark. For life too this works lmao
Those injuries where you don't even know realizer you did it and the next morning your back is locked out and you can't walk, but you keep on riding until it heals. Those moments where we give up or we keep on going build character necessary for endurance
I somehow missed this on GCN at the time but came to it after googling Marks name. I suffer insomnia and came across his Cycling the Americaβs doc on BBC4 at 3am just now. Truly inspirational stuff. What a legend!
Fair play to him for what he has achieved. Wowzers. ππ»
Anyway, great insight and advice. I wish I had a tenth of his ability. ππ»
Strength in MIND – Strength in BOBY
Fantastic interview. Iβm training for a vEveresting and found this really informative.
Fascinating interview. You let him talk and his passion and knowledge flowed. Well-edited too (the cutaway shots). Keep up the good work!

Really great info from Mark. Sure knows his stuff.
The hardest things about ultra cycling for me is 1) getting cold late on in the evenings/night esp when you stop. 2) finding it hard to sleep when bivyiing 3) dehydration n nutritional problems. Otherwise it's all good
Really sound, sage advice that really resonated with me, from a legend who's a master of this craft. Will take these golden nuggets into my randonneur challenges for 2024. Great video @GCNπ
Amazing guy!
Going to get his book on ultra psychology and advice.
So many good pieces of advice here.
Conditioning. Now I know what I need to work on.
Iβve always wondered why I struggle with long rides , yet can race cx at high age group level and mtb races.
There is so much more to ultra than being fast in races
Absolute solid advice! Thank you Mark!
At 16:50 Mark says he was on 110g of carbohydrates per hour for 28.5 hours, with 17.000 kcal in total. How does that work with 4 kcal per 1g of carbohydrates?
What a legend
