Het grootste verschil tussen een kajak en een kano zit hem in de peddels. Bij een kajak gebruikt de bestuurder een dubbelbladige peddel, terwijl bij een kano een enkelbladige peddel wordt gebruikt. Dit verschil in peddels heeft invloed op de manier waarop de boten worden bestuurd en voortbewogen.
