Frankfurt stands out among European cities with its modern skyline, featuring a significant number of skyscrapers in its downtown area. Unlike many other European cities where historical buildings limit skyscraper construction, Frankfurt embraced modern high-rises, earning it nicknames like “Mainhattan” (combining the Main River and Manhattan) and “Chicago am Main.”

Over the past 30 years, the Frankfurt skyline has become a landmark, with nearly 40 buildings exceeding 100 meters in height, including 19 of the 20 tallest skyscrapers in Germany. Much of Frankfurt’s downtown was destroyed during World War II, allowing for the modern skyline we see today. The first high-rise boom in the 1970s was followed by another in the 1990s, with continued growth in the 2000s, 2010s, and even more skyscrapers planned for the 2020s. As of 2022, Frankfurt boasts 18 buildings that are at least 150 meters tall, more than any other city in Germany.
