Fifteen Palestinian paracyclists, whose dream is to compete in an international tournament and represent their homeland, regularly train on the streets of Gaza.
The group, called the Gaza Sunbirds, is the first paracycling team in the Gaza Strip.
The Sunbirds don’t fly, but they ride their bicycles through the streets of the enclave, overcoming all kinds of challenges to reach their goal.
“I was targeted by an explosive bullet, which led to the amputation of my leg,” says Alaa al-Dali, who founded the Sunbirds in 2019. “Things became incredibly difficult and disheartening. I lost my leg, my hope, my dream and my determination,” he adds.
For these athletes, cycling isn’t just about personal triumph. It’s also about raising the Palestinian flag on the international stage, proving that determination can help people overcome setbacks. (AP)
