    1. Stiff link …. Back pedal slowly and watch the chain as it passes over the jockey wheels… you’ll find the link. Make sure the link isn’t separating …. If the link is just stiff, just use your thumbs and flex it back and forth until it loosens up.

      Stiff link or bent outer link plate. Pedal slowly and check exactly where the chain starts to skip to narrow down the area

    3. As a general rule it’s important to note how often a noise happens:

      Four times a pedal stroke is a cog problem 

      Once a pedal stroke is a chain wheel of front derailleur problem. 

      Every two or three pedal strokes is a problem on the chain.
