We know that cycling’s good for our health, but now a scheme running in West Yorkshire is prescribing cycling as a treatment for a variety of health issues.

    The Cycle for Health project, funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme, is now in its third year in West Yorkshire, and has already helped around 300 people.

    At the start of the programme, more than two thirds of those who took part admitted they weren’t doing the recommended levels of physical activity a week.

    Cycling UK spoke to some of those who’ve taken part.

    I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety and a little bit fast as well at times I isolate myself find it difficult to communicate with people make sure you can see me good speaking a laugh I just were stopping in bed far far days so you stopped living pretty much it’s very very low know when it’s girl bed not waiting to do a lot like cycle house game is an intervention my lung function is a lot better than it has been and my fitness is increased and I am able to be out some with other people well now live normally and now actually we want to do with the same ease we teach how to position yourself in the road hand signals how to ride in a group looking over shoulder checking for traffic and anything else coming so it covers the whole range it’s improved my stamina as well as confidence and for me I like being outdoors I’m not really gym person so now whereas previously I get in my car and go to the corner shop now I get on my bike it’s Sam seller the gears on the bank how to use them to go for him to make it easier we can now go on the main roles to get to another track with confidence initially some people aren’t even sure they couldn’t physically ride a bike you might have been 10 or more years so that giddy child look that people get when they realize they can balance and we can still balance and usually within 5 10 minutes they’re doing doing loops and grinning and that’s the first bit where anything remember this is my kid we’ve seen some really positive benefits both during the course for example people who were having difficulty motivating themselves and even coming out of that bedroom they were really looking forward each week to doing the cycling and it was evident before we went out the difference in people the energy levels when they came back and this really enjoyable activity and it kind of also gives a sense of hope the future that people can achieve things drains you leave you feeling and sort of invigorated and J you might be a bit tired a bit sore but yeah it’s very very positive thing recycled for health scheme has helped me be well and stay well be part of the world
