Some people might think that a trail mountain bike is a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none, however, Tom Law believes that they could be the only bike you need for shredding the trails.

Here is his five-point case for why the only mtb you need is a trail bike. Do you agree? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

average weight middle of the road and mediocre for some Riders trail bikes are exactly that but in my opinion they’re the only mountain bike you need here are five reasons why I think you should choose a trail bike is your only weapon of choice trail bikes are the all-rounders of the Mountain Bike World just like the hatchback is to cars a hatchback can be a cheap practical vehicle that swallows your whole family and their things but it could also be a high performance Road Track or rally car with a Need for Speed with just a few alterations their performance and use completely change and for me trail bikes fit the same bill throw on some lightweight wheels and scans of tread ties and you’re ready for a cross country or Marathon event or you can slap on a set of downhill tires bigger brake rotors and take it to Whistler the Alps or a bike park and lift a tow the tail yes a bike specifically designed for either of those situations is faster or more confidence inspired ing however it won’t have the breadth of abilities or adaptability of a trail bike yes you could trailer FY an XC bike or firm with the suspension on your inur bike for big days in the Hills but for me trail bike strike that perfect Middle Ground of enough capability on the desense while also being spoty enough on climbs at a simple wheel or tire change is all it takes to sway the bike’s performance should you want to go outside of its Everyday Use case you could almost have three bikes in one which brings me neatly on to my next point they can save you money while we’d all love to abide by the law of n plus1 in this day age and financial climate having multiple bikes isn’t always practical or indeed even financially viable a trail bike with multiple sets of tires and maybe two sets of Wheels is far cheaper than having two or maybe even three bikes for different occasions it’ll also take up less room in your shed garage or house and you won’t have to worry about the cost of keeping several bikes in tip toop working order with them being so popular and adaptable they could hold their value better in the used Market as well so if you come to sell your beloved trail bike you’ll get more back for it saving your money on your next bike [Music] too well this next point isn’t true in all cases in many a trail bike can be better value for money too cross country and Ino bikes are nowadays quite specific machines and more focused on racing than ever before with many things only available with expensive carbon fiber frames take specialized epic and enoro as examples they’re both sold exclusively with carbon frames with the cheapest models starting at around $5,000 or £4,000 compare that to the stum jumper the Brand’s good old trail bike they’re around $11,000 or £1,000 more expensive yes I know the stump jumper is allo before you say it but if you want to get your hands on a solid bike it’s still cheaper all the same and more apples to apples comparison can be found found over at Canyon the brand has two trail bikes in its lineup the noron and spectral sandwich between the looks cross country and stride injob bikes the cheapest neuron with the car frame is $300 or300 cheaper than the locks for largely the same specifications at the burlier end of the scale the difference between the spectral and the strive is even wider the base spectral CF7 is $1,800 or £1,100 cheaper than the cheapest strive CFR Underdog yes there are examples out there that are more evenly matched in price between the categories but in a lot of cases buying a trail bike is going to be cheaper than a bike with a more specific intented [Music] use not all that long ago if you wanted to tackle tough descents a lot of riders preferred all mounted or injur bikes for the extra capability provided by a little bit more travel and slacker geometry now though trail bikes are so capable that it really calls into question whether you actually need more travel or Psy of geometry anymore head angles on trail bikes now mostly hover in the 64 to 65° range wheelbases are over 200 mm and suspension designs have been refined so that Trail Bites can often keep Pace with their berlier stablemates modern Trail fors like rock shocks Pike and lyric and Fox’s 34 and 36 are lighter plusher and more controlled than ever before while the man Matic is also a true all round thought that is equally at home on a trail bike or even a cross country bike throw in advances entire to technology and you have a recipe for incredibly capable Trail machines they’re so capable that some Pro andj Racers actually use trail bikes on flatter and smoother courses Jesse meled has been known to ride Canyon spectral trail bike instead of the Brand’s longer travel inur bike the stri for example but there can be no doubt that trail bikes are more capable than ever on The Descent adding further fire to the one bike to rule them all argument [Music] last but by no means least they’re just loving good fun to ride on almost any Trail a trailer bike will be a hoot to Pedal about on as I’ve already said they’re light and nly enough to throw around and pedal all day yet barely enough to tackle pretty much anything a rider dares throw them down now if that doesn’t sound like fun then I really don’t know what does would you have more fun on a specific bike for the job at hand possibly but you’d be having anything but fun if you’re nursing a cross country bike down a double black diamond rated downhill Trail or winching your Hefty inur up a steep long and Technical climb on an all round it like a trail bike you can ride more Trails which means more fun so that’s why that I think the only bike you need to have in your stable is a trail bike do you agree or am I talking absolute nonsense let me know in the comments below and if you want more trail bikes then this is the video for you

    1. most people can get away with a longer travel XC or dare i say "down country" bike. that is the "do it all bike" for the general population.

    2. It’s gotta be the XC fully for me. With some ultra light semi slicks, I can take it to a gravel event, and with a modern XC tire combo, I can conquer almost all of my easy-to-medium difficulty local terrain. Slapping a something like a Forekaster on the front allows me to tackle the more technical bits too, and I don’t have to be afraid of some mud either.

    3. Agree. A modern trailbike is capable enough on anything but dh tracks or blown out bikeparks while being a lot zippier and more fun on flatter terrain than a full blown enduro bike. I ditched my nomad for a 5010 for the pedal days and a v10 for the bikeparks/riding dh tracks. Enduro bikes have IMO become a dog’s dinner that lacks both the playfulness of a trailbike and the capability of a dh bike, which is only a pound or so heavier these days. Only makes sense when there’s plenty of gnar without lift access but in that case I’d go for an ebike.

    4. I have 160/150 Almnt bike. No I cant do all. Not great in bike parks, absolutely not great on XC track . Ideal combo for active biker is one Downcountry and one Downhill bike.

    6. I have four bikes ranging from downcountry to enduro. Everty time i do an upgrade on one bike, i see it as an investment in all the bikes AND future bikes. N+1
