For this weeks Scuzzy Escape, I take a ride out into the Hertfordshire countryside with an old friend. We stumble across an old World War II American Airbase that was used by the 355th Fighter Group and later the rare sight in England of a windmill. We have some fun with the road conditions and enjoy some single track speed as we close the loop on a great day out in rural England.

[Music] [Music] this well something a little different today we ventured out to the country so let’s see what harach has got to offer so we’ve just jumped off a train at a little place called watet Stone and we’re making our way on these country roads up to a little place called Royston we’re going to see what Royston could show us it’s got plenty of History none of which I know but that’s that can’t fix it now but I’ll show you what it looks like if nothing else this is what we’re dealing with this is tough so I thought what we might do every 4 to 6 weeks or so might do something a little different maybe a a gravel ride out in the the countryside something just to break it up a bit and today we’re out here in the half Countryside heading towards Cambridge we’ll give you a little look of what the English Country Side can look like and all these little Villages so that’s the plan if you like it we’ll do more let’s see how it works out and now a village Red Hill here we are so around this time of year this is where you start to see all these rape Fields these beautiful EXP bances of yellow everywhere and when you’re riding past them you get this smell which is really hard to describe but once you smell it you don’t forget it it’s not a bad smell views of these yellow fields are just superb I’ll try and give you a better view at some point when we’ve got an overview yep check that out so nice this side not [Music] much nice yeah it wasn’t the happiest chat [Music] so what I thought we’d do every few weeks or so maybe every four weeks or every 6 weeks something like that I’m going to drop in one of these alternative videos there’s going to be some interest to it’s not just going to be cycling on the road and the country and stuff like that it will be a bit of that but there’ll also be some sort of Interest some history show you what the villages are like what the areas look like that sort of thing um we’ll give that a try every now and again just to break up the monotony of the same old l and stuff although it could keep doing that forever obviously so we’ll give that a try see what you think if it’s popular we’ll do some more it’s not it’s fine that’s how it goes all right well we’ve made it to the little village of Royston in harer we’re back in harer now ooh dear that was a close one going round the roundabout many roundabouts in Full Circle well we’ve arrived in Royston and we’re going to go and have a look at the Roy Stone says here that the Roy stone is a glacial Pebble from the penines therefore not local to the area in folklore it has been believed to have been the base of Rosa’s cross placed here in the 12th century by a certain lady Rosia so let’s go and have a look at it well this is it big old Roy Stone it’s quite a thing to Lug down from up there isn’t it well this is what life is like out here in the countryside so you’ve got your old school signs some sort of symbolic thing there whatever that might be come out to roystone and the half with your Countryside you might just like it here he comes telling me I’ve got a turn left I can do that job oh look at this little bit of Hors work in the [Music] countryside maybe one of these days they’ll take you out on a horse ride that’ll be different this the sort of places you can find around [Music] here Little Farms nothing serious it’s very nice he’s very very nice well-run Farm I imagine yes now we’re talking picking up the speed through these country lanes this is what we like woohoo there no cars coming we’re all good the cars coming at here everything’s clear woohoo we’ just arrived in a village we were at earlier but this time we’re going to stop and take a look at something got something a little different here so let’s go and see what it is so what we have here is the famous chroma windmill which is stood on this site since 1681 and it’s now a grade two listed building and is the last of its kind in the area and a windmiller stood on this side just outside of chroma on the artificial Mound here for the last 800 years don’t forget me I’m the hero of the [Laughter] show nearly a dead one then woo that’s windy that was a close one so much for these quiet country be lens e that could have had a very different ending when was the last time you saw a horse and cart on a road sign where are we somewhere in armish country speed and power yeah [Music] well I do hope you’ve enjoyed some of this alternative trip today I’ve had a great time within a real hoot such good fun I mean I’ve been out in these Lanes loads of times so many different times but never quite in this area everything’s new there’s always a new track you can take new Lane a new Road there’s always something it’s great to be out here in the harer countryside you get to meet these guys hello well I just got a message from Houston and guess what we got a problem so I don’t know what it is but let’s go and find out what the problem is oh that’s the problem wrong turn I thought it was a mechanical of some kind okay I don’t know why I just assumed it was a puncture if I have followed you it have gone on for Miles you seen me in the rear of view okay I overshot the turny it happened not in the old days you would have gone 20 miles when you a on the motorbikes and then realized I wasn’t there all the other way around travel and M all right everybody just get yourselves a cup of tea slow-mo is happening here okay we found something of interest at last the perfect Road for a gravel bike I feel like I’m back in the ’90s cuz there’s little fluffy clouds everywhere it looks like there’s nothing out here doesn’t it but it’s amazing what fun you can have with a road sign a bit of track and one lonely puddle now sit back and admire this beauty welcome to Hara [Music] boy I love the better of speed down the gear box woohoo all right keep that momentum going get you up the little bump well this is a challenging one these are the most cars we’ve seen in the last 6 hours yeah here we go we are in good that was a game of patience uh thanks a lot well this little track just about marks the end of our trip around today we started at wated Stone and we’re going to be back at watut Stone any minute I certainly enjoyed it I hope you did too this has been your rural Countryside edition of scy London I hope you liked it I’ll see you next time scy London swag down the street with your red Li RS and funky beat you better hold your head up to the sky I’m going to roll with you till the day I die swing those
