Omaha Beach was one of five beach landing sectors of the amphibious assault component of Operation Overlord during the Second World War.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies invaded German-occupied France with the Normandy landings.[1] “Omaha” refers to an 8-kilometer (5 mi) section of the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve river estuary. Landings here were necessary to link the British landings to the east at Gold with the American landing to the west at Utah, thus providing a continuous lodgement on the Normandy coast of the Baie de Seine (Bay of the Seine river). Taking Omaha was to be the responsibility of United States Army troops, with sea transport, mine sweeping, and a naval bombardment force provided predominantly by the United States Navy and Coast Guard, with contributions from the British, Canadian and Free French navies.

to allow The Landings on the beaches to be successful so it’s a cliff here are we ready yes okay to keep training everywhere uh in Normandy even in the Forbidden areas and they could see him going you know concentrated on cycling but in fact he was observing discretly and then once back home he was uh having somebody working with him drawing a map with all of the details of the German defense so thank to mer they knew a lot of details of the German defense and so um as I told you before as we were in the bus they knew the an eyes knew that here there were six guns um that were powerful enough to hit ships that were going to stop offshore of Utah and Omaha Beach is on dday and if that was happening it was going to be a disaster so you see the type of guns that the Germans used here they were 155 Millet guns long and they were French guns of World War I but they were still good guns of course in World War and on your right hand walking you will see the barrel of one of these of the same type of guns it’s not one of the guns of point the because they all disappeared after the war for metal salvation but it gives you the size of these guns the same type of G the miles wow course everything is empty and you can see the holes in the ground everywhere these are bom craters it was heavily bombarded on had already been bombarded but on the they even more heavily bombarded it’s cribbed by bomb craters and it’s one of the only places in Normandy where it was decided to preserve the bomb craters everywhere else every was leveled restored the Farmland was restored as Farmland the towns were restored houses were R monuments were restored but here it was decided to preserve all of this to let it become a memorial uh to honor what the sacrifice of the rain land I’m going to take you to the left instead of this roof that is moving on yes so you saw all of the bum craters my picture is not so big but I hope you can see this picture was taken on um April the 21st 1944 B4 dday and on this picture you can see the Triangular Cliff of pow and uh so this was taken this picture was taken at the time the Allies were doing the air bombings before dday to try and disorganize the German defense as much as possible here is another picture that was taken after with Point HW cribed by bum craters can you see and so you can see that here the air bombings were successful very successful they are bomb craters that were cons sequences of air bombings but also Naval bom boms um and then here where we are standing we are standing between one of the first gun placements that when the guns were in open air you see the remnant of one of the circular platforms and that’s when the guns were like this it could swivel and shell 360° away but then Romo said that they had to be protected against air bombings so they started building new gunam placements as you can see on your left hand and if they had been completed on time uh the guns would have been put inside but only two of the new gun placements were buil and they were empty on dday because they had not been completed on then on the other side as we’re going toing towards the cliffs where the Rangers you will see one of the underground underground living to live [Music] i50 Germans soldiers and artillerist here it was not a lot but remember this happened towards the end of the war the German forces have already lost a lot forces in Soviet Union but also in the south of ity before and in Africa also so had millions of soldiers still fighting against the rans um thousands of thousands in the south of is and the rest was spread out to occupy the rest of Europe and um he could not have 1,000 men at each stronghold and um as a consquence they were plenty of small groups and here he was not going to use his V 45 years old f forces as I told so it was not but the Rangers came from the sea yes your photograph showed you know hundreds of bombs how how did the all those bombs miss the six guns well uh don’t worry they didn’t miss the G I’m going to explain you oh okay okay so uh the question was uh about um on the picture you can see many many many huge quantity of bombs of air bombings and how did the guns stayed intact and my answer was don’t worry they were not Inta but I’m going to explain you what happened so the seat today is really tce the Allies would have loved coming as short a day like today but it was not the case as I told you the sky was very cloudy there were it was windy and it was rough Seas after point omah which is a on our right hand side it was really really and the landing craft of the Rangers who came to point had big TRS they were released the landing craft from the ships they were released uh 10 miles upshore and they had to do the 10 remaining miles um on their own to go to point but by the time they were launched at One landing craft immediately sunk another one sunk a little later and another one capsized so uh it was all completely disorganized and there were two group of Rangers who was supposed to come to point down the first group had to come the foot of the cliff at 6:30 in the morning and they were 225 in this first group and they had to be on top of the cliff before 7:00 uh and then um they were those who had so many problems so they were not not 225 Rangers anymore when um they came U to the foot of the cliff and they lost a lot of time because of the landing craft if they didn’t see were um too far to the east if you look behind the group on your right hand side over there you can see another Point another cliff it’s beyond the point that you can see over there that om Beach is will go to om beach after point and so the first group of Rangers was moving into the wrong direction without but their Commander Jame Lieutenant Colonel James rer he was from Texas he survived the war he became the president of Texas A&M after he so the mistake and he gave the order to correct the mistake of navigation and they finally landed but in late they landed at the right Beach not Beach sorry at the of the right Cliff but instead of coming as short at 6:30 morning they at 710 and not far away from where we are as the other group went to the other side that came on this side but the landing happened on the other side and and be careful we’re going to go upstairs but these steps are quite steep so and by SE all of the and by the time the landing touch so two landed right here under the part of the cliff where we standing and the others on our right hand side and then they immediately fired the Rockets to put the gra to the but then the were to heavy of so they had a different type of Rocket L sorry grappling ofs that work a little better all of this under the German fire and they found a way to make it to the top not all of them 15 Rangers were killed or made PR or wounded but and could not make it to the top but the others made it to the top and from the top they had start progressing to capture the gun battery look for the guns knock them out of action and um also um it was a double mission actually they also had to capture the road that we’re going to take later to go to Omaha Beach and when they here where we are were but the ger inside had their personal guns so of course they opened fire the Rangers who were climbing and trying to capture this bunker and the Rangers were shooting back at them and there was um one Ranger who made it so fast uh climbed the cliff so you know the Rangers who climbed the cliff the fastest made it in 10 minutes look at this 10 minutes you jump out of the landing craft and climb the cliff in 10 minutes what do you think about this it was quite incredible after so much training that had been becoming really strong really good at finding and then um the Germans he managed to make it so fast to the roof of this bumper and he destroyed the antennas so that at least they could not communicate with the rest of the gun battery but other rangers had hard time to get to the top um from the same Ling craft you know this bunker is now almost at the cliff Edge but on dday it was 15 M Inland from the cliff Edge so it does not look at all like it was on dday um and there were more uh more there was more land and more bomb craters and you imagine the Rangers hiding in the bomb craters once they had got and then they were pinned down in their bomb craters until one Ranger came to the top with the Bazooka and then he shed one time he didn’t have to sh the second time cu the Germans inside the observation ran away I mean sorry they left the room where they were observing from to get shed inside the bun and they were they were locked in from the interior and it took until June the 7th in the afternoon before the Rangers blew up the door and the Germans quickly ran out and surrounded by this time the other rangers we keep going if you have your keep going thick constructions in concrete they are I this is Omaha Beach and the memorials to The Landing in June 6th 1944 what now we’re actually on the beach with Landing took place the German steel put here obviously sand looks nice lot of European beaches and rocks stones and look at the number of sand Shaws up there that’s where a lot of the landing craft got stuck when they’re trying to land in the background you see the [Music] cliffs and there were bunk in the cliffs most of the bun were removed with their by foliage currently visualize 7,000 soldiers land in this beach at 6 in the morning what when are so just Landing the water wasn’t like it is now it’s a very calm day uh on June 6 1944 the Seas were very rough and when the landing crafts hit the first Shaw sometimes the men front would a flap open and they four or 5 ft of water and some of them didn’t swim that well lot should this is a modern art concept as a Memorial Beach have you heard from our God this even a significant tourist attraction for French people who come here teach their children what the American Americans did for the Americans as Liber Li
