5MV-103 – Tyre troubles in Sudbury

On a recent ride from Cambridge to the seaside, a CCC group and I stopped at Sudbury in Suffolk. At the stop I observed a nasty split in my front tyre; I could not complete the ride. Because the tyre split was quite bad, I looked the train times up, the quickest train would take five hours (4.5h + 0.5h from the station to home) to get me the 60km back home. I decided to take a chance and ride the bike. I did, however, take the precaution of letting pressure out of the tyre. It got me home but I did put some tape inside the tyre to prevent the innertube bulging out and to reinforce the tyre.
It took me less than two and a half hours to get home, less than half of the time it would have taken by train!

    About the 5MV channel
    ————————————–
My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will (mostly) last no longer than five minutes. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime.

I am new to posting videos on YouTube (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload.

There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-).

    Terry

I’ve just ridden to Sudbury and suffk from Cambridge with my cycle club they’re carrying on to west of Mercy unfortunately I’ve got a split in my tire so I’m going to have to turn back because the split so bad I looked up the train times and the quickest train to get me back to Cambridge takes over 4 hours so I’m going to ride back and see whether I can beat the train it’s quite bad but I let some pressure out of the tire and I think it should get me home lowering the tire pressure I think did help however the cuts contined to deteriorate during my 60 km ride home so I did stop and took the tire off and put some Gorilla Tape inside the tire to stop the inner tube bulging out now I don’t usually like to throw things away but this tire I think is ready for the bin I managed to ride the 60 km back home in about 2 and 1/2 hours which is about half the time it would have taken on the train so it would seem I am faster than a speeding train if you can catch up with me I’ll see you in the next video okay I admit it this is probably a bit more like me

    1. Good post. Take note everyone!
The same fix got me home once. Additionally I've got a couple of others out of the "mire" with it. It's nice to stop and help others anyway but there's no one more grateful than a bloke saved from long walk pushing an expensive bike.
All my bikes have a few wraps of it round the pump or seatpin.

    2. Just curious but why didn't you stop in a local bike shop in Sudbury and buy a new tire and continue with your planned ride?
