right let’s not mess about you’re a busy person and if you’re anything like me your ruined detention span is about 5 seconds away from screaming at you to click on something else or open Tik Tok or search for videos of dogs wearing hats but just stay with me for a minute because this car this deserves your attention this is the new ionic 5n and it is astonishing and if you’ve clicked on this video chances are you know what this car is you know what it’s about you know what it can do stuff like that and you can probably guess what kind of questions we’ve brought it here to the Glorious undulating roads of the Scottish Highlands in search of answers to and I’m here to tell you that the answer to just about all of those questions is the most emphatic yes I knew it would be good nothing could have prepared me for how good welcome all to the ionic 5n and welcome to the fully charged show like fully charged you’ll love our fun-packed everything electric Expos around the world come join us in harut farra and Vancouver remember energy and transport professionals Go for free Speedy reminder of why it’s so hard to make a really great electric driver’s car number one weight electric cars are fat batteries are heavy and weight is the killer of agility handling tactility number two size electric cars are big big car make Road feel small and when you’re constantly having to breathe in and worrying about clipping a wing mirror on a lamp post you’re not enjoying yourself but the big one number three the engine there isn’t one and an engine is historically a huge part of what gives a great driver’s car it’s personality it’s what you’re engaging with it gives it the noise you’re pulling gears and connecting with it when you don’t have any of that you feel a little bit disconnected from the car you don’t feel that involved in moving it along the road but what says Hyundai if you could have all of those things without the engine [Music] so what’s this thing like to drive well let’s get the performance figures out the way first brake horsepower 609 or if I press that button briefly 650 not to 60 MPH that’s dealt with in 3.4 seconds and it’ll do a lap of the nurburging in less than 8 minutes don’t you know and you know what I don’t care about any of that because frankly fast EVS are 10 a penny and yes this is an exceptionally fast one but it’s not the quickest a Tesla Model S plaid would have this on toast then again I’m about as interested in driving a plaid on a road like this as I am a car made of toast what I care about and what Hundai claims it cares about with this car is how it feels I’m going need to start by talking about the bunkers raft of features hyai has given this car to make it feel exciting where to begin well you can completely make it rear wheel drive as standard it’s all-wheel drive but at the push of a button you can have all the power going to the rear wheels actually to be more clear you can disconnect the front motor and just have the rear one running so then you’re down a couple of hundred horsepower but you do have a completely rear wheeel drive ionic 5n it’s even got a drift mode combine those two things and you can go very sideways around a racetrack don’t know how many ionic 5 buyers will be seeing a racetrack but if you want to you can then there’s the pretend engine noise if I press this button here sound happens now there are three different sound profiles to choose from none of them great to be massively honest with you my favorite one is this one that just sounds a bit like a turbocharged four-cylinder n badged petrol car the other two sound like dishwashers to my ears and we’ve had sound in EVS before the tyan does it the BMWs do it the abar 500e does it a lot but it’s really well executed in this car it really matches what you’re doing with your right foot and it does just give you a little bit more atmosphere it connects you to your inputs it gives you slightly more sense of speed than you do when you’re zooming along in silence [Music] where things get extremely interesting and the feature that you probably clicked on this video to hear about is the gearbox well the imaginary gearbox because if I pull down on this paddle and then pull down again I’m in second gear and if I floor it without changing up we hit limiter and I don’t get any more torque until I pull that paddle and when I pull that paddle the motor briefly disconnects I get jerks back in my seats I start the Rev range of third gear and we do it all over again now here’s the remarkable thing about those gears they don’t exist it’s all fictional it’s pretend there is no gear box it’s an electric car this is just software it’s just software look downshift FY downshift FY down shift you feel the car getting jerked you feel the engine breaking when you shift down it’s it’s mind-blowing of course it makes the car slower because it’s limiting your power you have to move through the gears in order to access more torque whereas if you just have it in normal mode with all of this fancy software Switched Off you can just bury your and have all the power straight away it’s a perfect example of the fact that speed is not what makes a car fun and interesting engagement is now you may well be watching this and thinking well hang on is it not off-putting knowing that none of this is real it’s all pretend it’s software there’s no gearbox isn’t that offputting and to answer that question I’d like to quote the Matrix there’s a scene in the first film where Cipher is having dinner with agent Smith and says to him I know that this steak isn’t real I know that when I put this steak in my mouth The Matrix is telling my brain that it is Juicy and Delicious and after 9 years do you know what I’ve realized ignorance is [Music] bliss if our reality is that at least for the near future cars are set to become a little bit less exciting what with the death through the petrol engine and the Advent of electric why not alter our reality to make it something more fun if the steak tastes good incidentally augmenting reality via software to make cars more interesting not a new thing BMW have been piping fake noise into the cabins of their M cars through the speakers for yonks now the difference with this is if you don’t like it you just turn it off ah in fact we’re approaching a we to which gives me the perfect opportunity to demonstrate this car’s split personality because at the push of a button it goes from fizzy little Thug to an ionic 5 the best family car in the world in my opinion and it is quite remarkable how uncompromised this thing feels just as a normal electric family car you’ve got all the things that make the ionic 5 great huge amounts of space front and back you know heated seats front and back great infotainment system Wireless Apple carplay all that good useful stuff storage bins and cubby holes and cup holders and you know family stuff really the only way in which this car feels at all different when you’re poling around town is it’s a little bit firmer but not unpleasantly so it’s also got a little bit less range given the extra power or a lot less range depending on how you choose to drive it today has been a lot less day but that’s it it’s 985 it just happens to be a total Thug when you feel like it gosh what a nice town that was anyway oh are we oh [Music] yes now we have to acknowledge that all this fancy software imaginary engine noise and imaginary gearboxes and whatnot would be completely wasted if this was just a normal ionic 5 with a bit more horsepower which is what so many performance EVS we’ve driven have turned out to be the normal car with a shedload more power thankfully Hyundai’s end division aren’t really into half measures as such just about everything from the body shell to the battery mounts on this car have been stiffened and made more rigid they’ve added more welding points and extra adhesive just to make the whole car just you know that guy at a house party’s like punch me in the stomach bro punch me in the stomach I won’t even feel it ionic 5n meanwhile we’ve got a quicker more direct steering rack at the front which I love we’ll talk about that in a second we’ve got an electronic limited slip differential at the back we’ve got big sticky 275 section tires at all four corners which I’m quite grateful for given we’re getting all the seasons today here in Scotland we’ve got beefy electronically adjustable sport suspension we’ve got big strong brakes we’ve got a wider track we’ve even got an extra inverter that allows this car to pull monster regen braking this car can pull .6 G’s through Reen what’s that all about mad now what does this all amount to well it amounts to an electric family car which feels communicative playful and lighter than it really is for the most part I love the steering on this car it feels like just thinking my way through these fast sweeping bends with the really small inputs and there’s so much grip I mean you can go into the settings and make it all Waggy tailed and rear wheeel drive but I’ve have no interest in doing so today on these greasy Highland roads and when you’re moving along it doesn’t feel like a 2.2 ton crossover family car not at all it feels Nimble and up on its toes the only time it feels its weight is when you stand on the brakes and there it is there’s the mass yeah there’s no hiding all that heft when it comes to slowing down that’s that’s not something that we’ve figured out yet through science I’m sure we will one day but heavy cars feel heavy when you need to slow them down quickly happily the brakes are really good on this thing I thought they might be a little bit weak at first but actually you just have to kind of stand on them quite hard they’re not big expensive carbon ceramic jobbies that grab the second you breathe on the brake pedal really got to lean on them don’t mind that but most impressive is just how much information I’m getting through my bum through my hands mostly through my bum this car is telling me what’s going on underneath me it’s telling me how much we’re loading up on those tires how much grip we’ve got left loads and it’s confidence inspiring you don’t get that level of communication through big electric cars typically and when you do have it you trust the car you feel confid you know where the limits are you know how near to them you are and that is what inspires you to drive like a proper silly goose this car might not be faster than something like a Tesla Model S plaid but I can drive it faster because I feel confident to oh that’s a big bump it’s the fancy electronics and the imaginary gearbox that are going to steal the headlines for this car I’m sure and they deserve to they are gamechanging features but the unsung hero here the real star of the show is the chassis and the unimaginable number of hours that hindai end division Must Have Spent fettling with it in order to create an electric car that feels so [Music] engaging a quick piece on the interior of this car we did a really detailed walk around of the exterior and the ENT interior interior o because it’s an end car interior when we first had a look at it in in a studio last year so I’ll keep this brief but there’s some things with notes in here first of all it’s still very much an ionic 5 it’s all very recognizable we got this lovely open plan cabin although there’s this thing here now permanently so you can anchor your knee against it when you’re pulling big skids and there’s even some cushioning for your shin bone that’s nice but what’s changed massively is the steering wheel and some of the stuff on the screen and I have to say I’ll give it the full nerd setting if I put that in N no press that and then I put this into the end mode setting screen look at that that is the most information I’ve ever seen at once it’s quite intense I’m a pretty tech savvy Chap and it’s taken me all day to figure out how to do certain things in this car to give you an example I couldn’t understand why when I went back to normal mode I was still having my paddles uh work the imaginary gearbox instead of doing what I want them to do in normal mode which is adjust my regen I figured out subsequently I have to press this button down here this button is just for turning the gearbox on and off this one you can go into n mode or your custom mode you can also have a second custom mode I don’t know how you access that this one’s to go from normal to Eco to sport this one gives you that little extra power boost for 30 seconds that’s taken me all day to figure out and then when you look in here I mean this is this is bunk over here I can set my custom um profile I can have heavy steering full whack motor traction control however I want it suspension however I want it this is my setup for these conditions everything on maximum attack traction control on please and suspension on comfy that’s all good but then we’ve got the GeForce reader over here we’ve got track modes we’ve got race modes we’ve got it’s just a bit over heling I find there’s even a lap timer down here here if I press circuit I can cycle through a a menu of iconic circuits around the world I don’t know so the car can give me navigations if I’m on that track now just like all the other features you can just ignore it and not use it if you don’t want it if you’re not interested but it feels a bit off to me that they seem to have so prioritized the racetrack in developing this car cuz I think 1% of ionic 5n owners are going to track it ever ever the rest of them are just going to hon it around lovely B- roads like the ones we’re on today and that should be the focus this is all even for me a bit [Music] gucy you know I realize we have the most spectacular location today there is no better place to drive and film cars than the Scottish Highlands that’s definitely helping but that aside this is without a doubt the most I’ve ever enjoyed driving an electric car this thing this thing is breathtaking this is one of those cars we’re going to look back on in a few years and go yep that changed things that was a bit of a moment and let’s just do our caps to Hyundai group very quickly I feel like all I do is praise the Korean car brands these days can you blame me the normal version of this for me the best electric family car probably the best family car full stop and then they’ve produced this thing which is the most fun and interesting and engaging electric car ever and I’m not saying this is the way to make electric cars fun this is the one and only solution give them pretend gearboxes and make them feel like petrol cars but it’s away and we’re just getting started this is Hyundai’s first attempt at a full-blooded performance car it’s one of the first electric performance cars wait till you see what the Ferraris and the Aston Martins of this World come out with once they get stuck into electric really what I’m trying to say and my big takeaway from driving this car something I’ve been reminded of today is we’re just scratching the surface when it comes to electric vehicles and what they are capable of so to my fellow petrol heads who still view EV as end times for driving pleasure my message to you is this be patient because we’re just scratching the surface and we still have no idea just how incredible electric cars could turn out to be this is the proof

    1. Seeing plenty of cynicism in the comments re the fake noise and gears. Understandable! I was dubious too before I drove it. But I encourage you to reserve judgement until you’ve had a go for yourself. Good news for our UK viewers: we’ll have a bunch of these available for test drive at our Harrogate live show in a few weeks.

    2. I can’t see why Tesla can’t add sounds like this to the new Highland Model 3 Performance. They are around the same acceleration and the Model 3 is lighter. Add the sounds and it would be just as much fun for thousands less.

    3. Jack another great review, Hyundai Ioniq 5N is almost perfection, the perfect Hyundai will be i20 sized electric N model with same proper N treatment ❤😊😊

    4. Is it really "fake" though? Performance drivers want an extra control surface with engine braking. We're thinking of it now as a fake gearbox, but will people two generations from now even be thinking about gearboxes + engines, or will they simply see it as a kind of advanced mode for track drivers?
600 horsepower from a Hyundai hatchback. Flipping heck.

    5. The fake engine sounds will be a thing for a few I’m sure. But then how many of us yearn for the sound of CD loading or a record dropping onto the turntable. For me it’s a now thing but it’ll get wearing quickly. That said it’s a lovely performance car.

    6. Massive backwards step, gears and noises are a thing of the past. We must move forward and leave all those obsolete things behind us along with the engine!

    7. That car looks like the perfect solution for all those petrol heads who believe EV's are souless and boring. Hyundai have created a car that will become their top seller I have no doubt. Great review Jack and brilliant filming.

    8. I bet Hyundai is spending good on hyping this car up… Because it is pure nonsense.

Where I live, this car is 22000€ more expensive than a Tesla Model 3 Performance, has considerably less range and weighs 300kg more. Why anyone would buy this escapes me.

    9. I personally love this EV, but can't justify purchasing it myself since I don't track cars and it would feel like a waste to just use this car as a commuter car since the standard long range trims can do it better given that it doesn't take as much of a range penalty with all of the extra features this car offers.

    10. I don't feel we need fake engine noise and the downsides of pretend ICE cars. If it is the only way to get certain people into an EV, maybe, but I love the silence now I have been driving an EV for past 3 years.

    11. I honestly have a hard time telling you how good its little brother (Kia EV6 GT) is, and just knowing that makes me want one of these NOW. I currently own six factory supercharged ICE performance cars (GT500, Redeyes, TRX, Durango Hellcat, Blackwing), and I am surprisingly impressed with the lessor EV6 GT. The I5N is that much more of an enthusiasts' car than the GT. I am actively trying to make a deal. I am one of the NEVER EV people, but I was trying limit the boring miles on my ICE vehicles, so I tried a performance EV. Obviously, for me range is not an issue as I home charge a few times a week. If you cannot charge at home (or work) and/or need to travel across the country…EV is not for you (unless you like to wait for a refill)! Is it a driving video game…yes!

    12. Just drove my ioniq 5 premium from York to Luxembourg via the Harwich/Hook Ferry. Couple recharging stops at IONITY – the car has more range than I do and was up to 90% before I had got my cup of coffee. I’d love the N but what about the INSURANCE? I have a full no claims, but still got gouged for insurance on the regular car. I really need the EV industry to focus on decreasing insurance premiums: train your mechanics, stockpile spares, build serviceable cars.

    13. The 5N seems to be the EV poster child for the enthusiastic driver. Yes there are faster and possibly better handling EVs outhere (not many of the latter) but non thus far have offered the engagement that Hyundai have so fantastically bestowed the 5N with. its pretty outstanding. Its BMW M3 quick and offers tons of practicality. Its the best stab at a fun EV I'd say.

    14. I think I know what I would like to road test at Everything Electric North in a few weeks….. if they are available that is…. Great work as always Jack. See you on Friday 24th May in Harrogate 👍🏾

    15. The benchmark for EV performance has been pushed so high what with the Plaid and Taycans of this world and supposed hothatches getting 450-600(odd bhp) that because this has 641bhp, we thinking on the slow side. Blimey. Its McLaren F1 quick and can hold its own against the M3s and RS6s of in real world scenarios. You aint gapping the 5N away at the lights unless youre pushing on towards a ton in a dragstrip scenario and are driving something really special. It really is that quick. Bonkers

    16. Love EVs and how they drive. And I drive my 3rd one now. But to get wider acceptance we have to solve the rip off electricity prices. The pricing method is a con like the Enron scandal, but legalised. Energy doesn’t cost 27-30p per kWh. The prices are yet again a government causes rip off.

    17. Does the shifting of the gears give the battery a momentary reprieve (in regards to heat and strain) allowing it to perform better, or is it negligible?

    18. All gimmicks. I'd get bored of the shifting really quick. Why can't they just give evs their own sound identity? You didn't watch Tron and go I wish I heard bike motors..
