Many years ago, while still a younger and fine long distance walker, an English friend and I walked all the distance – from Walls End to Solway and then back during a week (We had found a book with the walking passes during a visit to Housestead Fort)! We also had to walk to our sleeping quarters, during that, some times a distance away from "The Wall". It looks like many of the stone-fences around may have come from the wall and we saw a dike crossing a private field, which had clearly been a part of the Wall. We also talked to a Family building a new garage on their land, who had to pay a large sum for the area being searched for possible Roman finds, before the built (they found nothing). They still find the stones with initials from the Roman Soldiers having built it, all being collected at the Museum at Walls End! It was a nice trip, though not that much of the actual wall is to be seen during much of the Distance.
Looks epic. Great riding 👌
I did this route in July 2023, although advice I received was to get the train between Seascale and Sellafield as the route across the dunes had been badly eroded by a storm. I really enjoyed the ride and was really surprised at not seeing many people doing it, however I did meet some nice people during my ride. For me the worst part was heading along Bowness on Solway, the straight road appeared to go on for ever.
Hi Emily, really enjoyed this video. Can I ask what route finding computer you used? I see you had the Cicerone guide also – was it helpful? I noticed in the link description you put the HCW as sustrans route 75 – I thought it was route 72? Looking forward to more vids. Thanks.
Good video and well done doing that journey, how did you find solo cycling that distance, OK or would of prefer company.
