Looking to try out road biking. Currently riding a 700 Multitrack for 11-12 miles daily. Went to local Trek store today and rode a Domane AL 2 Gen 4 and fell in love, but want to make sure I really love road biking before dishing out $1200. Thoughts on this bike for the price for entry level?

so i have a one series 1.1, and it’s actually VERY similar to the modern RIM brake aluminum domane, in terms of the original parts and geometry. the one series which is now discontinued, was the entry level mode for Trek road bikes. i would recommened a used, good condition one series (granted it’s the right size) to any beginner road cyclist. the parts are easy and cheap to replace and it’s versatile.
it looks like the own of this particular bike has replaced the original stem with a more comfort oriented stem….you’d probably want to switch that out for a regular +-6 degree stem, the length of which will depends on how how long you need it to be. also make sure the bike is the right size; it looks like a 54cm which is what i have, should fit anyone 5’7”-5’10” with normal limbs. 54cm came with a +-6 degree 90mm stem. i switch it out for a 60mm stem.
this bike looks pretty scratched up and it’s got a ton of stickers..it depends on your area but i’d offer $120, i don’t think that’s lowballing. i would definitely not pay more than $250.
and if you were trying to ride this bike fast and in a more aggressive position you might end up replacing the saddle, since that one looks like a comfort oriented saddle. also expect to pay for a tune up, just based on how the rest of the bike looks all scratched up, which would be $100 maybe? i would also budget $80 for some nice tires. if you end up looking at this bike in person, take it for a ride and also check if the wheels spin straight by holding the bike and looking at where the rim brakes meet the wheel. if they ain’t true that may help to knock off a few bucks….
if you got it for $200 and put another $400 in parts into this bike, it would outperform a new $1000 domane imo. better tires, TPu tubes, nice used saddle, stem, narrower handlebars, new cables and math a new chain.
