Good morning and welcome to a very chilly autumn day in the Lake District. Beautiful, clear blue skies. So glad it stopped raining. We’re here with the BYD Atto 3. BYD stands for Build Your Dreams, and it’s the biggest car manufacturer you’ve never heard of. They sell about 250,000 units every month.

Now, you may remember our experience at the launch event just outside Bolton. BYD have given this to us for a week so we could take it on a road trip. So for a little taste of the itinerary, we’re heading over to Manchester to Old Trafford to see the Ford Explorer.

And last but not least, we’re got to take this wonderful SUV down the illuminated strip at Blackpool Lights, and we may even segue over to Lytham. It’s a beautiful little market town and they have a Pizza Express. I think I know what we’re having for dinner anyway. Ben – you’re up!

BYD have been around for years. First off, you know, the first Nokia phone being indeed made the battery for that has made a battery and built a car around it, booted first entered into the electric car market. I think it was around 15 years ago. They now provide vehicles in 70 countries.

And about your first question is, well, where do I get one? They’ve actually adopted a dealer network. You can’t even buy them online. You can get them from places like Pendragon Lookers and a number of others. The three trims to choose from and ours is top of the range.

You can see its origins with the Chinese dragon. So yeah, BYD are Chinese. But that’s a really good thing nowadays – their battery technology, it’s one of the best in the world. You’ll realise it’s not just the batteries that are advanced, it’s the whole platform. This is E platform 3.0.

They use Blade technology, so it uses far less space and they do use the industry standard nail test. The batteries form part of the rigidity in the platform. Great proportions, the silhouette. It’s just well, you can tell that the designer was ex-Alfa Romeo and VWG. All paints are complementary, 18 inch wheels,

Plastic cladding, decent ride height, doors that cover the sills, it’s quite roomy. Charge cables – and you can tell I’ve had a mountain bike in here. There is no all wheel drive option. And the really cool thing is it starts at around 37,000.

This one one’s closer to 40 but is all singing and dancing. But because BYD offer, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all wheel drive, it’s not beyond the realms. This is front wheel drive, power folding door mirrors, blind spot detection and keyless entry.

These can play smoke on the water because they’re actually tuned. It’s very well refined. The build quality, the car moves before any well, elements move just offers something completely different to every other TV that we’ve ever been in. But you still got the functionality and practicality in droves. Wireless charging, but roomy, spunky.

It’s rather futuristic and it’s very straightforward to use decent infotainment screen. And I do like this micro cluster electric seats, perfect as a family SUV and an armrest that’s wide enough for you and your passenger. Now you will find hard plastics but there of a good quality also the rest of the interior

Seems to be enveloped in a vegan leather for isofix points on the front book bucket, either supportive recycled materials throughout and a six foot three decent leg room and headroom and have got a foot rest down here. Sadly, no grab handle on the driver’s side,

But there is one on every of the door. Just look at the size now the interior is inspired by a gymnasium, for example, kettlebell. These are supposed to be like the weight desks and treadmill on the armrest and the door handles well. They’re weightlifting bars. Well, it’s ridiculously chilly tonight.

We’ve got to put the vehicle on charge ready for tomorrow. Impressive real lights. And those are simply LEDs. Just look at that light bulb. I’d agree. It’s very futuristic, heavy. And you do have the sound when reversing. You can even see the camera through the center because the big screen

Time to plug it in our charger. I’m glad we got the five minute cable because the charging point is here. Just plug in the tape to as you can see by the close to that, it shows that it’s now plugged in can now hit boost

And this overrides any scheduling have a look out on charge and when it’s charging that’s interesting it doesn’t illuminate. So in a car park, people aren’t going to wander up and go, it’s late charging at 6.3 kilowatts. We’ve got 32% battery remaining time, 6 hours, 38 minutes. Nice,

Nice and straightforward to see is well equipped. Is tech loaded? It’s comfortable. It’s got some interesting, quirky features. If you want an SUV that stands out from the crowd and offers a decent range, then yeah, this might be the one for you. And on that note, good nights out.

So we’ll see you tomorrow. Chilly night. So be interesting to see what kind of range we get tomorrow on on the clock. Chilly morning. Well, it’s been on charge all night. See what it’s got? Claims around 260…243! It’s not bad, is it. Minus two weather was Well yeah. And on that note. Okay,

Looks like we’re going right out the driverless term, something that’s a little clear that cameras is bringing to circle. Okay, you’re left. Whoa. Nice. That’s for an SUV filling out the top of. That’s good, isn’t it? Very good. This car, this car just continues to surprise, isn’t it? Does. Right.

While today we’re doing something a little bit special, only it’s a four. It is. We’ve already announced that we going to go to the Blackpool illuminations But first, we’re going to head down to Old Trafford to Evans House show to take a look at the brand new Ford Explorer.

It’s a bit dog walker. It’s today. No, it’s got some on it really can shift this car That’s interesting Now the Atto’s established how we’re driving it’s put the range up to 251 woohoo. Which is you know pretty much what it claims.

That’s awesome in half a mile and the temperature is five degrees Celsius and with the windchill actually feels a lot colder than not today. Yeah that could be a fun day. Do you like driving? That’s you can see from the rear that I’ve now got rid of the bike.

There’s the bike has gone home. Has that It did a sterling job with the fans on one and I think I’ll pull on my heated seat. Okay. The range is dropped to 240 so it reflects whatever you’ve turned on. But for the sake of

Having a clear windscreen in this weather, it’s a good balance to harvest it. You’ve got to weigh up what you need to keep your car safe and you decent temperature. Yeah, it feels refined. Lovely steering, nice and direct, great feedback. And even at this speed, it’s got a decent weight to it.

I am not passing you on the bike, Ben. May not. The chance is very kind of you to try and be accommodating, but safety first. Yeah, well, I know if people come into this exact way. Yeah, because you’d be driving these roads only at night and certainly it’ll happen. You still get slacked.

Say to what? I’m squished 50. There’s actually launch control in here and yes, that noise does drop off the higher speed you got. One thing I’d like to see is a heads up display Safety features a standard. Are they. Yeah. They’re so even the passing point and you got

She was going slowly That’s the difference. Yeah. That thing is that’s the only point you can really pass them unless it’s further up. Yeah. Then. Okay now in sport 231 miles of range. So I’m going to change it back to the eco mile. Interesting.

You don’t feel it as much as other EVs when you change modes because you can only feel it for your pedal. Okay? And this, you know, it doesn’t know. It’s nice in a seamless sense. No? Yeah. No, it’s a good system. They’re going to be more deep reducing to know what they’re doing.

Does that feel surprising? Is it the volume of cars and other vehicles that they sell monthly and the commercial vehicles as well? Well, everything that they do trains, planes, automobiles. Now we use weights. It takes it all is great. But do worry.

All you need to do if you want to go to say you climate control, you just navigate home. You press the buttons and you press be wide. Then you escape button, escape button. Exactly that. And you’ve got all your navigation here of where you want to go if you need to.

Well, if you want to go back. But if you when you go back to Apple CarPlay and then back twice, you just press up a little bit. Apple now we’re looking at to because these when you go into the meat and phones of what you’ve got in terms of settings on this system

There’s a lot in here to actually have a look at driving assessments for system pipe in the sense of around active safety. And clever thing is you can disable it all. Yeah exactly. Yeah. I mean why would you want to in new energy let’s look at energy feedback intensity ratings by road

And look it’s telling you real time what the battery’s doing. Got charging settings of a mile come up, have the roundabout say natural is responsive isn’t it frosty and consumption a quarter of a mile. And you can see that in the ground if you want to because you could actually drop off across.

I’ve never heard you pronounce the word gruff. Sorry for mocking my wife. That is a graph. He’s a graph. I’ve never heard you said that roundabout. In how many years take that? 17 years. I never heard you say the word graph because we don’t talk about standard graphs. What?

Your graphs, what types of graphs, skin graphs, what it would be skin graft. They say work. No graph was an aggressive skin. You know. Thanks for the mocking. You’re welcome. Any who I’m going to go back now. So press home on that hello previously take the third previously no longer

A motorway was the shortest motorway in the UK and the M6. It’s in Manchester. I just get on the M60 and we get all the way to the Trafford Center, take the third exit and then go to quick lunch that you have.

You can go back onto the motorway to head over to Blackpool. Can’t wait. Yeah. So. it’s looking quite good actually. Yeah. Well the 61. No just takes us back now. Yeah. We’ve got the right guy joining the motorway. So slowly, loosely two lanes. Mr. Kanaan, you’re in an Audi punch.

This is quite quick. Yeah. Well it’s got to be a rocket is say it’s an electric counter. There’s no hesitation there. There’s no scrapping of the wheels. It’s a great pendulum, you know, it offers something different but something rather impressive. The whoosh, that’s it.

One of the things I like so much about Be Windy is that not afraid to show the quirky side? No. And of course, we’re a big fan of that. I mean, just look at it. Look at City right now. this feels lovely.

If you’re tucked up this and there’s so much in here, it’s just a package. Just the highways. I mean, how come Jenny’s business one’s in the back? That could probably get pretty old pretty fast, but. Yeah. Okay. I’m going to give you a quick update on what the powertrain is now doing

As far as economy goes. Yeah, because now we’re on the motorway, we’re at high speed, so they’re traveling at motorway speeds and it’s dropped down to just under 230 miles of range, which I don’t know. But considering that they’ve got 56 miles to go, yeah, that’s plenty.

Well I say it, we can go a little faster can’t we. I mean flow, the traffic’s just going, you just know. But six and that’s if you need to get out of the way of something that looks like it’s at the central traffic

Or if you need to overtake having got power and availability of range is who you need and even motorway speeds, you put your foot down, there’s still power there if you do need to. Now we’ve started going up hills. It doesn’t look steep.

It is. It’s a heck of a poorly findable turns around. We’ve dropped down to around 220 miles of range, but I am a touch of a motorway limits because that’s the speed of the motorway, to be honest. I’m happy with that. 93% of battery. Right. I’m going to press.

Is it standard? The belt down there. Yes, that’s the high standard and I want to see exactly what it does is outstanding that it is. All right. So right now, press how you going? I really can’t work out what it does at motorway speeds. It’s quite fine in the cabin isn’t.

No, especially when you consider how far out the roads are. You can hear a bit of wind coming off the mirrors. But to be honest, the pretty big speaking of those, you’ve got blind spot detection. And I have noticed that this b-pillar is a bit chunky, but because you’ve got

That kind of mitigates anyway and it’s just something to be aware of. Is that really. you see, listen to that. Now it has dropped a bit, but this is part of the motorway is the tourist feedback in terms of quality is a good point. On the belt

I haven’t actually mentioned claim always had eight but it’s now up to that before you can barely hear it. I’m motorway speeds in the standard regions weighty enough at the back off I can feel it. And it’s not just me with that for a motorway and it was cool for my customer.

Well that’s some quiet time noise in comparison, isn’t it? It’s amazing how much of a drop off you can experience the drop routes. Movements are acting nice on long journeys. This is the joy on the motorway. It’s just effortless for it. You’ve got decent power handles. Well, even with this,

I suppose. It’s a slight wind, isn’t it? There’s no buffeting. Say not you, but safety, collision detection, lane mitigation departure warning lane, keep assist, adaptive. Also this padded area here? I think so I’ve not got my leg resting on a bit hard plastic bucket seats as well.

I do like the style that’s that’s the thing about this car it’s illuminated not in the fact that it lights up, but the color of the interior. It’s something that wow, look at that. Most interior is now a gray block. This is not.

No, but you can means you can have a dark roof because you’ve got contrast. And also we do have some mood lighting causes lighting here that does change kind if you use some of the applications like a fun kind of thing also flows down here.

So we’re off that when we come back from Manchester. Nice. If you like this type of video one subscribe to the channel. You just hit the button on the right hand side. It’s free and you get an alert every time you upload.

Also, if you do like the video, why not give it like it all helps and it means we can get more cars. Thank you. I do like the illuminations. It’s one of those things I’m I think I’ve gone to since Social Club, which. Yeah, believe it or not, we actually happen by John

Going back first years about 42 and I would say 1314 right Yeah right exactly. And look south am 61. That’s why we’ll be going we need to get some people have to do within the next eyelash. Exactly. Yeah. Which is always fun it’s always fun to cross over here

As blind spot detection nice and easy to see. The other thing is it picks the cars from a decent range. So it’s it’s not Tommy Egan’s because it’s like it’s a pick up and he’s got to up. This is Tacoma, who’s a Tacoma? I thought it was Tamsin, Annabel. Annabel, Annabel, Toyota. Tacoma.

Toyota Tundra. Yeah, I’ll try. We need to go to America. Yes, we do have loads. It’s so nice to just know you’ve got a power wheel temperature. It’s going to eight degrees Celsius. Right? So we’re now in the m61 and it’s 28 miles to Manchester. So how we’ve got 27 miles

To go, 38 minutes and we arrive at 2:00. That’s nice. And how much range do we have left? Thank you. Yeah, I’ve been going a bit quick. 73 miles. Yeah. You’ve been keeping up with motorway speeds? Yes. The safest thing to do. The thing is it’s 173 miles.

And when the slow down, you go back up anyway, invariably that’s what this does. It does it pretty well. July, which is also where full weight is perfect because it’s where it’s based on. I love it. So if you want to see guys, if you’ve never seen Brassic, check it out.

The dish of Gilligan is a genius. Look, Jimny nice. Yeah, He’s put a hell of a team together for that show. Getting great rewards, and he’s got stars. X plus. Wow. So many of those now. And he’s got they gel so well. But not just that.

It’s got some stars you just don’t expect to see in it like exactly. Yeah, but no no Orange. Orange is also where they come from felt because when I visit it are where they feel much and they look at the hills. I think you’re right. I think it’s Walney and it’s

Between Chorley and Orange. Right. Okay, so. good. A580. well, that’s interesting. Every time I’ve been to Old Trafford or the Trafford Center, it’s always taken me on the M60. This is taking it Salford through Manchester City. Wow. And it’s only was it five point No, 8.3 total.

Wow. Okay, this is going to be an eye opener because I have no clue where I’ll take us you to stay, which Australians were in sport and have been the whole time. Whoops. dear. But that would explain the range dropping because I wondered why it was so quick. And what’s the range now?

You’ve got parking tickets. 137 But I was going pretty quick. Well, we were keeping up with some of the traffic and it has to be quite high faster than to be honest. I think it’s going to increase cornering. It’s a 40 mile an hour bend. Look at it. Stay composed, isn’t there?

That’s the beauty of an electric vehicle, isn’t it? It stays composed. Yeah, that’s the way it. Okay, so work out. Where the heck to go. Looks like it’s straight on. It is. Basically. Stay on the street. One of the few miles I love. So we have a clean ASM, and we’re in Salford.

I am wondering, should we visit Salford off key then let my camera record it ahead. look at Cap. A cat with a bow tie and sunglasses. Yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that bit. Supra in yellow. That’s nice. Now we’ve been doing city driving. We’ve done about three miles on.

I think it’s warm. So it seriously economize is when you start doing city runs, which makes perfect sense. But it’s nice to see it Does it nice to see Manchester have adopted that so electric band except left left, left, left. Yeah it’s so confusing and that’s why I’m watching Everything is.

Yeah, it’s down here. Yeah. Exit left chatter clock here with the right way. Is this part of Manchester City. I actually know it very well. It’s a busier anyway. Well, Manchester City is huge isn’t it. Stay the course and then turn right. This is handy. Yeah. There’s cameras are really.

Take a look across. Thank you. In half a mile to traffic. Right Right. This one. No. Hey, Well done. good. Well, here we are. The next move. It happens. How? Show. Just wake me. Thank you. My destination reached, but we’re here. Well done. Amazing. I’ll be ready for the next mission.

Just wait me when you need me. Big, isn’t it? It’s huge. Okay, Perfect. Let’s go and see an explorer. Magellan, a fully electric SUV. Now, this is on a tour of the UK. We’ve got some nice cars here. I can see that BMW i8 a bright orange Mustang.

Also, we’ve just been invited to a launch of the dark horse Mustang. Likely the last one. What a lovely bunch of guys. It’s an interesting vehicle in it. Yeah, it’s, it’s got its kind of own unique style to it. You didn’t expect. No.

Because as you said, they’ve had the Explorer in the US for a long time so it was exciting when I heard it was coming over here. But when I found out it’s going to be all electric, I’ll say, what a good idea. I’m speaking of all electric.

We’ve got 133 miles of range, and our next stop is going to be Blackpool. This is going to be a far more sedate drive, isn’t it? Try a bit of an eco run. I think that’s probably the begin driving. Okay. Well, yeah, Manchester United

Tells us the ground is because it’s right next to Old Trafford. Well, I didn’t know that I until like seen this kind of thing. I know and the community spirit that you find for me is just awesome. 50 miles west that take us to Blackpool. we’re Manchester.

We can probably circumvent the interest and see which way it takes us. Well, are different groups. It’s big, isn’t it? I didn’t realize it was here. Yes, this is Old Trafford. Wow. AC It’s really exciting to see, isn’t it? Yeah. Does it matter

If you’re a big football fan or not know about that in this country? It’s like when we go to Wales and I see that Cardiff Cross turn left. I’m not a rugby person, but I’m just like, yes, it’s not really straightforward round here, is it? No, it’s a city at points.

It’s convoluted. The player who took a country bumpkin like am I in or I am? Yes, I told you to go underneath the bridge. So it’s because there’s still three lanes for the bridge. Yeah, but we’ve been here before, and this is the way we take a quick break. Check that right.

We’re back on the East Lancs Road and we’re heading towards Blackpool, 128 miles, traveling at just under 40. No heated seats on. It’s very easy to use this, even though there’s no buttons back on heated seats. It’s quite intuitive, isn’t it? Well, let’s just give a quick example.

We’ve got no problem swimming around. So if you get into the right hand side, then you press the buttons. Here, you go to be wide, then you just figure out what you want to use. A site like Fancy Taxi Climate Control. There you go. It’s all there.

So you can see teaching easy to use, sensitive enough that it works seamlessly and then you go quick and easy to use. The thing is, always remember that these buttons will not override your Apple CarPlay, Android, auto, etc. The first thing I will do, the Pacific Rim button will turn to media. Sensible.

But then you just press again and this back up. Okay. It looks like we’re joining the M6 again. 61 186 miles of range. Look at corner very little body roll. Wanted a 50 miles an hour. It’s quiet, isn’t it? Yeah, actually, refinement levels are excellent in here. Yeah.

Especially when you think of the price bracket in one mile. Keep left. Yeah. It’s a smooth ride, isn’t it? It’s not. It’s not jostling. It’s just it eats up the bumps, but it’s got enough cushioning and, you know, movement rather than bankruptcy.

Banks, bank, you know, and a little bit of body roll just adds to the comfort. Yeah, it’s pleasant. Yeah. Long journeys. That just means you’re going to get out. Free, rested, comfortable. Yes, Raring to go. It’s a long range, isn’t it.

Doesn’t seem to be changing now. It seems to be 1 to 3. We travel at 60. No, it’s pretty efficient traveling at just under motorway speeds is just over a mile for mile, which isn’t bad, especially at six degrees Celsius. You don’t see this everyday micro with mirror reflective windows going for it.

You think, okay, it was rather 1.35 Nissan patrol. Many of those I’m just going to count the sun now. One, it’s when the lights come on, everything goes into night mode. I like this looks the coolest and I’m very clear Classic clocks. We’re about to merge onto the M6 from the 61.

Never nice would actually say what say what seamless was this passing so Micra again of course we seem to be in a road race of the Micra I I’m trying to do an eco road and I might just propose I’m not quite

This isn’t how it is it’s gotten a heck of a lot busier once when I was coming down here. But you live with me and I think we’re in a wagon called blow out next to me. No no it was an my word

We just took the tire and it sounded like a bomb and the car shook its he controlled it, and then that was that. But it was loud. I wouldn’t. Yeah. You want, you don’t want to relive that

Because I’ve had a blow out in a car before and the golf and it was the rear tire and I didn’t realize because it was lower to knock it out. I didn’t realize just how I looked in the mirror and saw this stream of smoke coming off. Didn’t even affect

If it had been a front wheel drive, it would have been a different asset. But as a rear wheel drive, nope. I got out and all my words, but I didn’t really look like mine. I was doing, let’s say 70, but I was 22 years old. So 79 equate to that.

And you’re right, it did perfectly nice to control. Yeah. Yeah, it was fun. And then I found out I didn’t actually have a jack or a spare wheel and I had to get someone to come out, bring things. He Well, Duncan wrote into that. Look how far away we go.

I was right outside and it was it called the Botany Bay. I was on that hill sweeping round about that well enough. He didn’t be prepared to put my foot down. Yeah, it goes up. So have a trench. You have 97 miles and we’ve got 17 to go. Yeah. And 42% of battery.

So motorway speeds dependent on the temperature and obviously the insulation of the road, steep hills, etc. it is around a mile at points. He does dip below, but then when you get on the straight, it’s closer to two miles. So don’t. So going to stay left. Now

You it’s weird because we don’t really have to stay right no way to go home. Yeah it’s it’s counterintuitive to go this direction.

    1. Great video. I'm looking at the byd atto 3 as my first ev. In which I will now order. Stunning looking car with a good range of battery. The car also looks fully equipped with all the latest tech. How did you find the built in sat nav. Also I see in the byd brochure there is also a byd dash cam you can add to the front of the car. It shows a rubber grommet somewhere in the black square on the front windscreen.

    2. I test drove one of these in the UK last year when we were looking to get our 1st EV. It's a good car with a funky interior but much more expensive in the UK than it is in other RHD markets like NZ & Australia. I've not seen many Atto 3's on the road this last year so I'm guessing they are not selling in vast numbers over here. I know it's the name of the company but I'd remove that Build Your Dreams lettering from the boot or shorten it to BYD – as they have now done on the new BYD Seal.
In the end The Atto 3 was a bit too large & expensive for what we needed so we got a 1 year old '22 plate low mileage FL Kona 64kWh for less than half of it's price when new. It's not perfect (no car is) but it suits us better & we've not had to used a public charger in 9 months which, IMO, is the only way EV ownership makes any sense.
They may have fixed it now but did your Atto 3 have a slightly wonky / off centre driver display – the one behind the steering wheel? Our test car did & I've seen other reviewers comment on this as well. Small issue but an annoying one when it's right in your line of sight.
      Role on Part 2.

    3. How many people in real life can afford £40000 for a car that costs more to run than a diesel, unless they can install home charging??
