A bike trip that went ‘wrong’ but taught us some valuable lessons along the way.
We also met a very friendly chicken…

#bikepacking #lakedistrict #cinematic
For quite a long time now there’s been a bike trip we just haven’t been able to get out of our heads to a part of the UK that completely captures a cyclist imagination wild expansive Untamed it’s somewhere that’s been on our bucket list for years just getting ready for it and
You’re filled with this tingly excitement maybe a bit of apprehensive nerves too well this is not that trip but this is the day we were meant to be leaving for it train tickets booked and everything then I got given a surgery appointment I’d waited over a year for and as much as I
Tried to convince myself otherwise I was still not properly recovered so we set off for an alternative with easier bailout options open-minded and optimistic but also a bit nervous about postsurgery problems and though we didn’t know at the time this trip will continue to go wrong but get saved by a
Magical moment at the end so it’s the middle of October all of the autumn colors are just starting to come out just starting to Glow yeah it’s the first sort of real cold patch we’ve had in a long time and although this was not the trip we were expecting or had
Planned I think this we’re just really looking forward to the next next weekend yeah the forecast looks although it looks cold it’s meant to be really bright [Applause] will we hold by for a little bit it’s really ready but it was going to take a bit
More than rain and hail to dampen our spirits and this positive approach would end up being pretty handy later in the trip rain has that it was 5:00 p.m. and the plan was to head south right into the heart of the Lake District National Park along the
Side of dur water which is one of the largest lakes in the area the rain had cleared and the early evening views were Sensational what’s s of these VI yeah breath especially with the light in search for spot to camp we head further south through picturesque Lakeland Villages old slate buildings tucked underneath towering Peaks and with chimneys chuffing smoke into the cold air just so distinctive and unique really suiting these cold days and darker
Skies now the light is slipping away and as the temperatures are dropping I’m a little apprehensive of our first cold Camp after surgery nearly there you happy here yeah I think one of the nicest [Applause] CS I’m not sure if the cold or a night
On a camping bed will cause any pain but these worries are quickly overcome by the wave of relief you get when setting up your little refuge in colder conditions stubby fingers and toes will shortly be warmed with cozy clothes and a hot all right I may brought your present okay close your
Eyes ah straight away when it’s going to be freezing this is secure thank you first mini day yep what are your thoughts it was beautiful it was really really beautiful the colors are there um just starting to really turn yeah and it was cold I was quite cold at some points
I was really cold but so now it’s the coldest night yes so it’s just going to get warmer from here and each day and each night it’s going to be warmer from here so we are saying this but it gets warmer by one Dee one degree the sun dropped we filled our THS
With hot food and the Stars just dazzled us it was one of those nights where I couldn’t help but freeze my bat off outside just taking photos the world calms and quietens down and you’re just left with a sounds of nature around [Applause] you [Applause] [Applause] hello morning the coldest night was now behind us and with no postsurgery pain I was feeling good the valley was filling with these golden Hues and Rays that seemed to warm your soul we felt inspired optimistic and perhaps a little too ambitious got to head along a bridal way
That we’ve never been along before and we don’t know much about so we’re not quite sure what to expect but we’re heading sort of up into the hills yeah towards W water so Bridal warries in the Lake District can go from really well packed kind of like tarmac all the way
To very loose very thin scrambly steep so I’m hoping it’s a for rather than the we will find Out you ready ready can see if we can get up this Bri away whatever it may be yeah okay about suck climb up into the hills and a bride away that we don’t know will work yes how you feeling yeah a little bit apprehensive because we will see we’re not sure if it
Will work but I’m hopeful it’s a beautiful day at least Bridal way passes like this you can just never tell how the terrain will be until you right on them but we were riding high from a successful night the conditions were perfect and we’d heard it was a
Beautiful Valley so we go and check it out for ourselves A little break cuz that section is quite hard and it’s been relatively flat yeah it looks like and then we’re meant to go up there but this is where our PL started to unravel we got to the bottom of great Gable and it was beautiful really
Amazing day but I was just could feel these little twinges and was looking at this stepped section going up this pass and just knowing we just have to carry the bikes up it and just think oh this is this is probably not a good idea we were sitting looking at the route ahead
And just knowing this climb would commit us to two days of tough riding and Hike a bike in the Hills we knew it wasn’t the right idea but it’s pretty demoralizing when your body holds you back on the one hand I’m impressed we made the sensible decision because we
Probably wouldn’t have a few years back but still making our way back down the valley Spirits were low and we felt a bit defeated this was one of those moments that could really be a turning point in a trip but we got down the valley saw
The Sun was shining and met a really friendly H the conditions were really good we had time and we were in one of the most beautiful places in the world and if there’s one thing cycling and life have taught us is that you’ve got to make the best of every
Situation we go with the flow enjoy beautiful places listen to our body and seek out a good wild camping spot and so we decided to make our way from the Eastern Lakes to the Western Lakes so we made it to fare we have we’re not sure if we can get around
Though no it feels like it feels like The World Keeps putting things in our way but we’ve just seen a sign that there’s basically work being done not really too sure that says that there’s no access but how many times does it say road closed and the road’s not really
Closed Famous Last Words perhaps but spurred on by the autumn colors around us in the Carree cycling we thought we go and find out for Ourselves so I would say even if you have to turn back this is definitely worth it really really nice okay ready 10 seconds come on come on We moved to the Lake District just a little less than a year ago but we got here just as most of the Autumn Leaves have fallen so this was our first time seeing the beautiful autumn colors and it felt really special knowing we’ now experienced all four seasons so we
Weren’t too bothered about any other tricks this trip might throw our way which was a pretty good thing so we’re we’re skting around the side of felir and this road has been closed for quite a long time but it’s actually you’ve been able to get through apparently some
People managed to open it but this time it’s not been chained up again so we’re not able to get through through bad times we were also told by a friendly cyclist that the next road we plann to take to the eastern half of the Lake District was also closed too basically
We now need to look for a different route yeah yeah I thought yeah so but it’s such a nice day it is beautiful and this has been such a such a beautiful diversion I think definitely wor it and so we replanned for the fourth time and backtracked for the
Second time we were in search of a beautiful wild camp and we had a feeling it would all work out in the end the sun was slowly setting we were getting pretty tired the first spot looked awesome but wasn’t possible because the farm was rounding his sheep the second spot
Though was absolutely perfect perfect so it’s about half 6 the sun has just dropped behind the Peaks it’s about freezing but the wind is really dropping it down so we just set the tent up and I think we’re both absolutely starving very cold and looking forward to beding
Down ready ready yeah so ready after almost a month indoors after surgery there was quite a lot riding on this trip particularly with attempting to fol the shoes of the bigger trip we had to cancel I was apprehensive about injuries and a bunch of things didn’t quite go to
Plan there were plenty of points we could have just called it a day and returned home but I think it’s always worth trying to stay positive and ride it out because more often than not you get moments like this surprises from nature that make it completely worthwhile the sunset sunrise is
Incredible want to come take a what what do you think it’s beautiful it’s absolutely amazing she has finally risen oh I think she’s about to pee come to me she’s joined us joined the show worth it yeah it’s definitely worth it you look really snuggly so we saw a beautiful sun
Sunrise and a beautiful sunset and a beautiful sunset this trip has been so disjointed but it just takes something like something like this camp like this and it’s just oh well it’s all all works out yeah this makes it sort of all worth of the higy pigy turning back turning
Back because maybe if we camped in a woodland somewhere yeah we wouldn’t have seen this we been to covered yeah so beautiful one of those mornings where it’s so nice out and the sky is changing so often that if we cooked in the tent I feel like we’d just be we’d be missing
It we’d be wasting it the sun is just starting to peek over sun is coming this was our last morning before going back to normality so we wanted to take our time cook up some breakfast and really make the most of it this Sunrise was too good to rush
Away from okay reflections of the trip um because we’ve had really really cold weather I feel like we have really seen Autumn come it sort of the trees have gone from being very very green to sort of all orangey yellows and falling and being really crispy on the ground so
It’s been really nice to be in the landscape as autom changing Yeah final thoughts it’s just been really nice just to be outside for three sunny days and to be taking it slow and to be going back not being like Oh my God every muscle aches it’s just this is nice just
To be like I actually feel really good and to have this as the last wake up I feel like this like Sunrise cook up and it just it fills you so much energy it’s amazing nourishing yeah so not what we expected but a beautiful beautiful trip is that good beautiful thank
You ah now it start to feel warmer my little TI thingss fell off in the night how we yeah from the like the first few hours thank you very much for watching yeah and we’re looking forward to taking you on our next Adventures yeah Stick Around by hi for

Sometimes the best trips go 'wrong'… thanks for watching folks!
Love your channel! Just put my bike in shed for winter, now I have your adventures to watch. WE are lucky in Ontario Canada
we have the old rail trails to ride. Very difficult terrain- but absolutely stunning -that you tackle. Best to you both.
Just found you two, and although biking isn't for me, the wife and I are enjoying your videos.
Cumbrian lass born and bred, although I no longer live there. I am binge watching your videos. Thank you.
Absolutely 💯 % the best trips are spontaneous and finding little treasures along the way. ❤
unplanned adventures and beauty is just what the Doctor ordered me thinks! Nice videos guys🙂 Hope youre recovering Josh.
We really enjoy these adventures especially now that you are in the Lake District. Do you think you will stay there or have you got plans to move on. You guys look fairly settled now.
Glad to see you are recovering.
Well done for a beautiful story. I enjoyed it. X
I just found your channel, and I'm curious about your cottage. Do you know much about its history? I know it's about 300 years old, but do you know who used to live there, etc.? I'm quite interested in Cumbria these days, because half my family came from there originally, and I have a feeling some of them might be buried nearby!!
Awww this looks wonderful..❤ You say you moved here…. just wondered where from?
Beautiful photography.
You made the best of a difficult trip.
Thanks for the video.
Hi just watched your video were you got loads of ticks. To stop the itching and the stinging from bites as well, rub hand sanitizer over the area it stops it . Lesley
I have just discovered your channel and wow! I am pleased I did. What a fantastic video. I used to be like you two but now unable to go out due to illness but this has inspired me to try to walk again and take small steps to a healthier me. I love you both and have watched all your video's . You certainly deserve a new subscriber. Thank you
7:39 That was never going to be easy, especially hike-a-biking, ESPECIALLY after your medical procedure. On a bridleway you knew ‘little about’.
There’s a fine line between adventurous and foolhardy.
Turning back was, in more ways than one, the right choice 👍
Great adventure, thanks for sharing all the beauty you experienced. Looking forward to the next upload, keep safe. 🚴🚴♀♥
Saludos desde España, gracias por mostrar vuestros viajes. Sois mi pareja ciclista favorita. Uso las mismas cubiertas, con una tira de keblad
Absolutely brilliant vlogs
Live. The dream certainly spurs me on sitting in my little cottage with the wood burning stove ticking over watching your adventures
Just found you on YouTube. I love the Lake District and we have camped with our children many times there! Being out in nature is a wonderful thing and I am loving being along with your travels there! 💖
Another fantastic and mesmerising film. Thank you
I just subscribed to your channel! I love that you're out at your cottage, learning as you go. One and my sons and his wife went on a 2 month bike early on in their marriage. Such a learning experience for thema and bonding, it was just them. I'm glad you're having this lovely opportunity to enjoy your lives together~
My new favourite YouTube channel! It's so cosy. I really hope you guys do some Christmas in the cottage content!!
Hope you have recovered from your surgery okay Josh. Visuals are beautifully captured. Please give Sarah time to talk and reflect – viewers will want to hear from her too – it will make your videos more complete.
🇬🇧❤️ Beautiful views, love the colours of the leaves on the trees, hope your feeling better, great video..
I liked your ability to improvise, and I like your appreciation of the nature. Keep up the good work!
I’ve enjoyed many of your videos of cycling England, Scotland, Ireland and your cottage life. I’m in my senior years with many new aches, pains and not great stamina but I would love to cycle many of these areas that both of you have done in a very relaxed pace though.
Thanks again for very enjoyable videos. 15:16
