The Netherlands is one of the few countries that has underground bicycle parking garages, and is definitely the country with the most of them! But most of these expensive infrastructure projects are new, and the Netherlands is still in a stage of exploration when it comes to building the perfect bicycle parking garage.

This video explores underground bicycle parking in the Netherlands, and some of the uniquely Dutch problems facing urban planners in the Netherlands.

  1. Given the cosmic surge of moutain biking in the states I sincerely doubt the council of boogie b*ches will be able to use hills, really bumps, as an excuse to dismiss bike travel.

  2. Some underground parking garages are not meant to be bicycled into, but it's not impossible. Like the one at the exact sciences building of the VU. Daring students just ride down the steep slope, which generally works totally fine as long as it's not wet and slippery.

  3. 7:03 your telling me someone form the us who only rides a mountain bike, and may have forgotten to do some maintenance on my disc brakes that, that slope isn't cyclable, even with my dogey brakes I'd be comfortable going either way if those weren't stairs, even on a bike without disc brakes, hell even if I only had front brakes I'd be comfortable

  4. Watching these videos just makes me really sad because I know the US will never accomplish something like this, at least not for many decades. And I unfortunately wouldn't wanna move to the Netherlands because I really dislike rain.

  5. How do you get a bike on the upper part of the rack? Is there some kind of lifting mechanism? Do you have that shown in another video? Thanks!!

  6. I'm disappointed you didn't have a shot of the Nijmegen garage under Plein '44, which has a piece of 15th century city wall in it. Nijmegen is a very old city and every time they dig for foundations they find old stuff, up to roman pottery.

  7. Instead of underground bike parking–which requires excavation and shoring up against water infiltration–why not make the ground level of the building bike parking and start the office or retail or residential area one level up?

  8. this might be a stupid question but how do i use the second floor parking that is everywhere in the vid. do i just lift the bike but i don't think i can do that consistantly. the station close to me have those and the second floor is often alsmost empty and i want to use them beacuse the buttom froor is full.

  9. Why not an elevator? Make it nice and big for cargobikes. Yes people would have to get off their bike, but only to stand still for a few seconds. It would not be effected by the rain, and would prevent situations like with that poor lady struggling to push her bike up stairs.

Also it would be able to access lower levels without the need for massive ramps

  10. 0:50 I just tried shopping at Albert Heijn on my vacation and its cash only if you don't have a Maestro or Debit card. You also need set up a whole address and other things that only work if you live there if you want to use the scanners to the scanning app to pay as you shop. So, this store is great for locals. We still shopped there since it was close, but Lidl was more convenient if you want to pay by card only as a visitor.

  11. I couldn't do it, I'm sure I'd lose my bike and I love my bike even though I barely use it because I stay at home 99% of the time

  12. I see all those bikes parked and my first thought is "Imagine how much space they'd need if they all drove though" – Yeah underground bike parking isn't cheap, but it's certainly cheaper than a car park per-space!

  13. Just before this video was an advertisement of two happy fit people getting ready to ride their bikes. Just after they took them out of the trunk of their car and unfolded them at their destination. That is the American mindset of bicycles. I am admittedly a "cyclist" but I very much appreciate the videos you make and I hope more people in the United States and Canada see them and at least think.

  14. I think there are automated underground bicycle parking in Japan. I’d love to see coverage on that: I imagine it would have a higher density and you would just leave your bike to the robot arm at the ground level.

  15. I live in Houston and I never found a need for driving a car. It just seemed annoying to me and extra work to go through a test and learning and everything to simply get around everywhere. It is absolutely criminal that I cannot buy some sugar at the store without having to know driving, take a test, wait for a license, buy a car, and go through everything so that I can get somewhere. I’m a big fan of biking and I’m probably going to go to a Dutch city.

  16. Does anyone keep a record of the bikes in all these spaces? I imagine several are left behind – – either forgotten or left by people that relocate or die. Someone would eventually have to remove the abandoned bikes.

  17. My understanding is that Amsterdam does not allow cycle-in bike parking garages as there were accidents happening with that, e.g with the garage at De Hallen near the Kinkerstraat.

  18. I wish we had places like this at trainstations in Germany. Sometime there are a few really small lockers, which don’t allow recumbents bike (so I can’t use them). Sadly the most of our politicians aren’t interested at all in bicycle infrastructure.
That’s why I got used to use car parking houses with my recumbent bike, cause it’s much safer in there than on the open road.
