The tunnel was part of the railway line that connected Stockport Tiviot Dale station to Manchester Piccadilly station. The line opened in 1840 as part of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway, later becoming part of the London and North Western Railway.
The Tiviot Dale Tunnel served as a crucial link in the railway network, allowing trains to pass through Stockport and connect Manchester with other destinations to the south. The tunnel is approximately 189 meters (620 feet) long and was built to accommodate the railway line as it passed beneath the streets of Stockport.
Like many railway tunnels of its era, the Tiviot Dale Tunnel is constructed from brick and stone, with a curved profile to support the weight of the ground above. It served trains for many decades, contributing to the growth and development of Stockport and the surrounding areas by providing a vital transportation link.
